Lifters

Post by misszora » Sun Jan 08, 2012 3:09 pm

One lifter didn't slide in as nicely as all the rest. I did not force it and it wasn't cockeyed. It went it just the same (all lubed up) but felt tighter, like it was scraping the edges all the way down. These are brand new lifters. Should I take that one out and try again?

even one grain of grit can cause it to hang up. a pull out and wipe down can be peace of mind.
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

recommendations on getting a slippery lifter out of its bore? I have a extension magnet but it's not strong enough.

Pulled it - so glad I did! There was a ding on the lip on the cam side. Bringing it back tomorrow.

This is why it didn't go in as smoothly as the other 7. The lifters nor the boxes in which they came were ever dropped while in my possession.

Grrrrr!!!!

I should note that on Gypsie's recommendation, we removed another lifter and put it the same hole where this lifter was to check for damage. It went in with ease. No damage!

Hello .... remember when I wrote the below, regarding your rear main seal?
Paige,
Think ahead of each operation your perform.

For example, rear main seal.
It has to go in a hole made by two different pieces of metal.
therefore
run your fingernail around the inside of the hole.
Is it perfectly smooth, or are the two pieces of metal (the crankcase halves) slightly not matched?
If your fingernail hangs up, so will the seal. Grab a trusty clean razor blade and drag it over the parting lines inside the hole and particularly over the chamfer around the outside edge. Carefully clean up any aluminum particles.
Every single cotton-pickin' part that goes into your engine must be looked-at, felt-up, lubed as necessary, your sense of touch is critical.
Really. This is not MuirGroovyHippyDippy nonsense.

For sure!!!! I did that with the cylinders and pistons and only glanced at the lifters.
I swapped that one for an new one today and ran my fingers all over it and inspected it before I left.
