if the starter clicked, try the starter with a screwdriver, (be safe, e-brake, NEUTRAL ). then check the starter, with a hammer. give it a couple whacks, don't wail on it just a couple solid taps. i generally tap the solenoid. they get sticky with age. solenoid can be taken apart, cleaned and lubed. need a manual impact driver to get the screws loose. used marvel mystery oil for lube, sealed it up with goop and loctited the screws.

i chased an intermittent no start for a couple three years. could always start it from under the bus. newly rebuilt starter failed because it sucked. put old one back in because it still worked .... most of the time. did hot start relay with a clunky old skool ford relay. worked better. took a junk starter apart to see how it worked then took mine apart and cleaned and lubed it. solenoid was obviously sticky when removed. hardest part is getting the screws loose. can't remember what it looked like where it hooks up with the fork that flips the gear out.

Isn't one of the posts on the starter solonoid a ground?

There is a huge fricken battery cable with unbelievable potential for electrical mayhem on one post, the IN.

There is a big fat copper braided high amp wire on the other post that leads to the motor itself, the OUT.

My rote memory recalls there was nothing attached to the post with the big fat copper braided wire that leads to the motor itself except the big fat copper braided wire. Similarly there is a second spade connection, a lower one, that hasn't got anything connected to it. Neither had anything connected when I disassembled.

Unless I have a flash of insight hit me, going with the extension and grounding to the nut holding on the starter.

Seemed to do the trick, although the white ground wire did reach the nut holding on the starter, just.

Crikey, bad coil.

Static timing is set, dwell meter, timing light connected, condenser disconnected to prime the oil. Hopefully gas will get there during that process and then first start, check timing, 2k rpm for twenty minutes. Shut down, drain oil, call it good for today.

Once I swapped the fuel lines on the pump.

Did the twenty minutes. Oil is draining. Tomorrow, adjust valves, check for anything loose, check transaxle oil level and further.

Runs pretty smooth. Still have to fine tune the carb, timing etc.

I do feel a tad overdue, or maybe just dues not paid.

Even finding itself, taking the nubs of newness off, it was smooth. Low vibration. No detectable oil leaks anywhere. A strange mix of "assembly lube", cheap 10-40 and petroleum jelly. Draining. Looked almost as bad as Bertha Bus's oil at the end.

First drive. Into Battleground and back. 40 some miles. Everything went well. Giggle.

The finished now driving engine.





After a wash, just back from town.







Still a lot of work to do.









I'm a schmo two times over. I did panic momentarily when I drove through the smoke of someone's woodstove or fireplace, but otherwise, things went pretty textbook as far as I could tell.

I've done this too after my Type 4 rebuild. Does anyone know how many miles have to elapse before one can un-bunch one's tidy-whities? Hopefully an uneventful trip to Maupin and back will finally settle my nerves.

done this 3 times. 2 with purchased longblocks and 1 purchased shortblock. by 500 miles, i was going full bore, no real high rpm, with the 2276 type1's. by 1000 miles ready to go anywhere. stock type4? if it seems to just run sweet, couple of breakin oil changes, and ,...where we going?
