1974 Super Beetle - Steering Coupling Assembly?

Post by Sluggo » Tue Mar 18, 2008 6:52 pm

My steering wheel has about 2 inches of very loose play. I looked under the Bug while my Wife shook the wheel and I could see that it was right under the column. Looks like two squares that link together. When you shake the steering wheel it moves either way quite a bit before it makes the wheel turn. Just wobbles where the squares meet.

Is this my steering coupling? If so, is replacement necessary?

Less money here. With some searching you may even find replacement U joints for even less. Assuming the U joints are the problem.

My 1974 beetle also had very loose steering. It turned out to be the steering box, which is hard to find, impossible to repair, and expensive. I learned to live with the loose steering. I hope your problem is indeed as simple as the coupler.
