82 Westy, how much play is too much?

Post by scruffy » Sat Jun 23, 2007 6:06 pm

Hey Gang,
I have an 82 Westy and was wondering if anyone knew just how much play is too much play for a steering rack. Everything else is tight, only slop seems to be coming from the rack itself. Can't say exactly but it "seems" like there's about 1-2" play at the wheel.

Thanks!

There is a preload adjustment on the rack, but that is rarely the cause of play. The inner tie rod ends, however, are a possible cause of play. I start from the tire inflations, wheel bearing adjustments, and work my way in.
