I have just purchased som Sil Glyde to assist in quieting my wifes volvo brakes, (notorious for disk brake squeaking).

Would this lubricant serve as a substitute for the brake lubricant mentioned above?

Seems to be used for other brake applications.

Cheap too (Napa $5.49 for 7oz.).

So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

I was taught to never use anything other than Brake Fluid for the innards. Sil-glyde and the like is for caliper pins and slides.
