Late Model Bus Brake System Redo

Post by gmag69 » Sun May 11, 2008 11:35 pm

I will be redoing my braking system on my bus. This is a how- to to help people with
1)brake hose/steel line replacement
2)caliper cleaning and reinstall
3)rear brake removal and reinstall
4) master cylinder/booster removal/reinstall
5) hand brake cable removal and reinstall

Most of my parts will be reused from my blue passenger bus since it had a brake job sometime not long before I bought it.

Here is some of the stuff you'll need to do this job.(I borrowed this list from Ratwell's site. Thanks Ratwell!)

* floor jack
* jack stands
* Tire iron (19mm)
* crescent wrench
* 11mm socket
* hammer
* pliers
* 4mm pin punch
* 6mm hex key
* 19mm socket and 150 ft.lbs torque wrench (73-79 models)
* 11mm flare nut wrench (2x)
* 13mm socket
* 7mm box wrench
* Brake line bender

Here are the parts I'll be replacing with new. I'll include the BusDepot part # with each part as this is where I bought them from.I'll also include how many You'll need of each.

1) Brake line kit PT# 211698996C (1) This is the full steel line kit for '71-79 buses.

2)Rubber grommets PT#2116117518 (8 )

3)T Piece PT# 803611755 (1) This is the T that splits your rear line to both sides of the bus.

4)Front hose PT#281611775B (2) these are left or right
5) Rear Left brake hose PT#211611775C (1)
6) Rear right brake hose PT#211611775B (1)

I'll add on to this thread as I start to disassemble the brakes on the blue bus and transfer them over to the Westy.
Check out my Westy Resto thread. viewtopic.php?t=2063

Hello -

Be careful of Bus Depot's part numbers for the metal brake lines.

Do you need one 'T' for front and and one 'T' for the back? Actually, would you recommend that you simply clean up the two 'T's and save ten bucks.

Thank you for all the fish . . .

That is a judgment call. There is no pressing need to replace the tees if it is not necessary.
