Brake Hose question 1973 Thing

Post by amishman » Sat Apr 12, 2008 5:53 pm

Did a hose replacement today on my 73 Thing. Passenger rear was a bugger to get off. I got it done and a new hose installed. Tell me, do hoses supposed to screw in ALL THE WAY or can threads be viewable? This rear one screws in about 1/2 way and tightens at that spot. I had to put a 11mm on the opposite end of that fitting that it screws into (it is welded to the Thing or fastened in some way) and then the 14mm on the other side so I could at least turn it a smidge more to get that hose on where I feel it is tight enough. Should these screw in 100%? The housing it screws into does not seem as deep as the nipple screw area on this hose so I doubt it but curious.

Maybe this fitting the hose screws into that is fastened on the Thing needs replacing but I wonder if you can even do that or? Maybe a few threads are dweebed up and that is why it can't screw in all the way.

Thanks for the support.

I'm thinking those are tapered (pipe) threads so it's ok to see some thread sticking out. ESPECIALLY if there's no leakage...Get em' good and snug.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong! :alien:

Some threads will be visible. These fittings are flared and seal by compression. It's best to get them get them tight, then just a little more if it drips. Have someone push and hold the brake while you check each one.
