Oil Filter Help

Post by misszora » Sun Aug 22, 2010 12:08 pm

Howdy!
Getting ready to change Miss Zora's oil and can't get the oil filter off. My handy dandy grabby tool was stolen with the rest of my tools last summer and I've been having my mechanic change the oil when I bring her in so I haven't needed it. I was wondering if any Portland, Oregon locals might have one that I may borrow today (Sunday August 22nd) or tell me where I can get one - the last one was a gift and I haven't seen one since. I'm kind of in a jam because the oil is already drained. :blackeye:

thank you!
- Paige

Walmarts, Kmarts, auto part stores have a bunch of different kinds for cheap. Glad you found one, now you have a spare if you get the old one back.

For future reference if you just can't get the filter off you can always pierce it with a long sturdy screw driver and twist it off. A little messy but it does the job in a pinch.
Chorizo, it's what's for breakfast.

Thanks, Hippie!
Yep, found one at Napa down the street. whew!
However, now that I've hand tightened my filter I'm pretty sure it won't be an issue next time. I do want to replace the old one though - it was awesome. =D>

I've found that even if you hand-tighten it, it will still be too tight to unscrew after 3000 miles. Damned if I know why; I've just chalked it up to the perversity of the universe.

Certainly, those of you who have oil filters should have a wrench that you know fits your filter. My neighbor needed one, and none of mine would fit his filter.

^^^ Ya, that screwdriver trick really works.

The "rubber" in the gasket swells with the oil and makes it tighter. I believe it's designed to do that so they don't work loose over time.
