type1 -clutch chatter

Post by zabo » Wed Oct 14, 2015 7:16 am

I'm getting clutch chatter going into 2nd gear, sometimes 3rd.
This is only happening when the engine is cold.

Once the car warms up everything smooths out.
Bowden tube looks fine, Clutch cable may be slightly tight.
I'm going to try and get under there today and loosen it a hair.

If that doesnt help Ill pull the engine soon to investigate. Just wanted to hear everyones thoughts first.
btw this is the 40hp engine.
thanks

I get it too, especially on moist days. Probably glaze on the flywheel. I have ignored it for many years.

Before you pull the engine (and waste 30 minutes of your precious life in so doing), remove the wing nut and the bowden tube bracket from the transaxle. Pull the bowden tube free of the metal tube leading through the tunnel just enough to lubricate the heck out of the cable and do your best to overdo it, pack grease into the opening of the tunnel tube and the bowden tube alike. See if you can rotate the bowden tube 180* and hold it exactly here as you reassemble. If it has an aggressive memory, it may fight you. Add a washer to the end of the bowden tube before you slip the bracket over it. The washer must not interfere with the bracket. Install the lower nut on the bracket and snug only lightly. As you cinch the upper nut on the bracket, pull down smartly on the bowden tube sag. This will pull any slop between the bracket and the studs to "full sag" position. Tighten the nuts to 14 ft/lbs. Reinstall the wing nut and get the free play to exactly one inch. Actuate the clutch pedal several times to seat the bowden cable. Re-check the free play. One inch at the midpoint of the pedal pad. Test drive. Let me know if the clutch chatter is now gone.
Weak pressure plate springs can exacerbate chatter, we need the friction of the sag to meet the engagement range of the clutch . . .

If you still have chatter, you can get the engine out just after lunch and execute a 90* cross-hatch on the flywheel and pressure plate friction surfaces, then wipe down with carb spray-soaked paper towel, repeat cross hatch and wipe down with dry paper towel. Then rinse clutch friction disk with carb spray or brake cleaner, then sand clutch disk lightly, under water in the kitchen sink, no really, your wife said was FINE not a problem. Dry with clean paper towels.

Reassemble with no greasy paw prints, no excess grease on input shaft, no oily residue on inside of bell housing, no excess grease on release bearing or pressure plate ring. While you are bolting down pressure plate in cross-tightening pattern of no more than 1/2 turn increments at each bolt, keep an eye on the pressure plate ring. Is it cocking? When all bolts are tight, is ring now perfectly parallel with ring gear on flywheel?

You might want to check the condition of the transmission mounts while you're under there. Ainokea

Very good point.
Gee, this conversation is slow. Hey zabo, how's the clutch these days?
