What is a "power wire from the coil to the AFM"? I know there is a ignition signal wire from the coil #1 (-) to the ECU.

Fix your connectors! Don't explode your variables yet. Use DeOx gel on each connector. Be gentle! Be thorough.

You can buy new injector connectors for cheep-cheep.

Looking at that picture, I wonder if I can't get in under the boot on the one I have and see if the terminal is either just loose or come partly off the wire. Might be able to just stick it back together, clean everything some more and be on down the road. I did feel a little movement in there when it finally started working, so I may have pushed it back together already.

I guess I was picturing a soldered end in there, not terminals. For $8 a may just buy one or two for my ever growing box-of-stuff-I-might-need-someday.

Thanks,

If the connector is the original one that came from the factory, I would be VERY surprised if you can do anything to it without destroying it. Over the years they become so brittle from the heat that if you look at them sideways they crumble. Spares of everything is always good!

It doesn't take much to cause a problem with 30 yr old injector connectors, so if you had the injectors cleaned then the fault now is in the electrical connections. Check em carefully or buy a noid lite to test each injector connector.

So, for $35 I could have four new connectors, I'm not seeing a downside.

Get three extra and do your Thermo-time switch, Auxiliary Air Regulator and Cold Start Valve while you're at it.

That's the one. It was completely off. I may have said AFM when I meant to say ECU.

Considering the condition of the harness as I saw it, crumbly with many 'broken' insulation spots and taped up all over the place, I would recommend sourcing the harness and starting from scratch

http://www.kyleautomotivespecialties.com/products

-or-

get in there and repair the harness you have now. Shrink wrap broken insulation areas, replace bad connectors, check each connector for connection and fraying, splice in jumper spots for short connections (like the signal wire from the coil to the ecu). Solder any that you can. This can be done by you. Take pictures of your current connections for replacement reference. A good repair job here may help avoid future troubleshooting woes...

-or-

just replace the one injector connector while you enjoy the camping season and keep an eye out for a harness at a upull...

Question for the group: Why would the decel valve, when connected to the (plenum) vacuum, make the idle go up. It will also kill the engine if the airflow from the decel valve to sboot is cutoff while it is hooked to vacuum (and idling fast). When not hooked up to vacuum the decel valve has no impact. I am trying to understand the theory behind the decel valve. (it is germain to Kubelwagon's issue here so this is not a threadjack).
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

So, having read Kyle's site I've written to him to discuss costs and options. I don't want to jump headlong into just throwing money at it. But, as Gypsie points out the harness I've got is pretty rough. The PO had a tendency to just tape things back together and I've been bits and piecing as best I can for a couple of years now. Might be nice to have something fresh to work with...

On the decel valve front, there's some stuff on the *other* forum:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archiv ... 643--.html

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archiv ... 252--.html

It sounds like others have experienced the fast idle with a busted decel valve. I'm inclined to try and find one at a pull yard and give it a try.

I have one of Kyle's harnesses on my engine. Excellent quality and should last another 30 years.

You can see some of it here. I've got better pictures of it somewhere I'll dig up and post when I have more time this evening.

Boy do I know just the guy you need to call.

http://www.kyleautomotivespecialties.com/

rebuilds Ljet harnesses for a little more than $200. ALL NEW except for the ECU and double-relay fittings which are disassembled, cleaned, and rewired. Even if you repaired your one busted injector fitting now, and then saved up to ship the harness to Kyle, you would be massively ahead of the curve on reliability.
