So the local tow and body guys know I'm getting the VW fever. Working on a 67 bug, 72 bus, 70 bug. They called the other day and said they had a sqareback in the impound and was I interested.
Long story short for a $50 tow I now have a 1971 411 in my driveway.
NO history.
No keys.
No nothing.
Now what?
I don't know if to part it or try to restore. The engine compartment looks good. Fuel injected. The only rust is in front of the doors. Worried this is heater channel rot. Do 411's have this like bugs?
Looking for input.
Steve
What Have I Done? I saved a 411 from the dump.

I can't be of any help. But I moved the topic to the Type 4 forum where it belongs. You'll get a more accurate answer.

Restore it. Do a good job. They are excellent under-appreciated cars. You need to make it extra-nice, however, to help overcome the prejudices. I would be happy to help you.Drhallster wrote: I don't know if to part it or try to restore. Looking for input.

I agree that a half job would just make it worse. But it will be a commitment. And right now has to come after my bus ad 67bug. otherwise wouldn't get the attention itt deserves. BTW the 72 bus fired up today for the first time since you left Colin. I got called away before we could do much, but ready to tune up. The 411 will need to be patient.
It certainly seems to be a little harder in finding resources.
