VW parts source in Portland or Seattle

Post by exoticdvm » Fri Apr 13, 2018 12:55 pm

Hi everyone,

We need your help. We are Marc and eliana from Birding By Bus (Facebook/instagram), doing a cross country trip for 8 months in our 1978 westfalia camper bus (Valentina). We will be passing through Portland and Seattle in the next week and are in need of some parts. Can any of you recommend a local VW shop? Do you know of anyone selling original parts? Or a store that carries a good supply of parts of this type of vehicle?
Thank you so much for any help or information that you can provide us with.
Sincerely,
Eliana, Marc and Valentina

They need a spare coil, and a new fan belt. Is there a good air cooled VW parts house in Portland? How about a beer at that Lucky Lab shenanigan I always read about, enviously, on here?

Hi stop by Halsey Imports in NE Portland, 7721 NE Halsey. They carry a lot of aircooled stuff and can get it in a couple of hours usually if not in stock.
I work there, ask for Hambone!

Hambone, they have sketchy internet at the moment. Do you have any knowledge of the late bay stock heater system (not the gasoline fired deal)? Their’s was working well, and suddenly quit. We replaced the cable here in Miami, and Marc says all the tubing is intact. If so, would you mind PM’ing exoticdvm, and see if you might aid them? They are gonna need that heat restored.

http://www.franklinsvwwerks.com/Products_parts.html is the only one left since BowWow closed and they didn't carry that much anymore. Even Baxter's Auto Supply has closed after moving from Greenlake to 175th NE as my supplier of aircooled motor oil and old school parts for my 78 Ford Truck. Cheap wharehouse space for auto suppliers is disappearing as apartment buildings are going up everywhere in the Seattle area.

Also try https://www.averysaircooled.com/ on the way up to Seattle as they have a lot of used parts so maybe you can find that missing exhaust clamp and O ring there.

A bit south of Seattle, these guys used to service air-cooled VW's and had an extensive inventory of air-cooled VW parts:

I haven't been down that way for a few years, so can't say what their current status is.

Thanks for the responses! They are at Lassen Volcano Park this morning, heading towards Portland, then Seattle. Their bus is running well, with the heater distribution being the major problem that they need to deal with, before heading up into Canada.

Not sure how much help I could be but they would be welcome to do any work at my place in Hood River if they pass through. Halsey is where I get most of my new parts. Don’t forget about Ken at ...is it “the bus company”? Up near Seattle for original parts.

Go to the Lab tomorrow and all your problems will go away! Once you're done with the beers and your problems are back, check with Ken- he's only got original German parts.

I was planning to take Marc out to Ken's for the missing parts they need but Ken won't have the exhaust O ring and clamp. I hear they sourced one.
