Sometimes You Nail It

Post by Amskeptic » Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:25 pm

I was mentioning, in this book I am writing? that there would be a couple of issues without a transaxle
to make better use of the engine.

With direct drive, for example, you would have to mount the engine sideways in line with the rear wheels.
A direct drive would give you approximately 225 mph at the engine's torque peak of 3,000 rpm.

Some people might find that perturbing . . .

with direct drive the engine would NOT have enough torque to push it over 40 or 50 MPH I bet. And it would take forever to get to speed. You think your VW is slow now just remove the transaxle ! For every ft lb of torque the engine puts out is multiplied by the final drive ratio....about 4 to 1, even in top gear, in the lower gears there's gobs more torque driving the rear wheels.
Take care,

My kids would probably be much more pleasant with a running engine between them.

That whole thing about loose fitting clothing or long hair near the generator belt just got a whole lot more terrifying.

Yeah, someone better tell that girl in the blue to tie her shoelaces if she's going to sit in the back seat.

I am working on the torque multiplication of the gearbox vs wheel horsepower. Yes, Rsorak71Westy, there is no VW engine that could possibly pull it off. I was talking rpms only.

With direct drive, we would be looking at laying down 3' 4" of rubber for every spark delivered by the engine. Good luck with pushing a bug through a wall of air at 225 mph, even if we are getting 100 sparks per 300 feet per second!

Yes, sped, you nailed it. That is a teddy bear! Gotta work on my depictions. We also have
Belle Plaine thinking that the blue boy with blue cap doesn't look like a boy, as opposed to the pink girl down to her shoes. Ah well . . . it would have been sexist of me, anyways . . .)

I debated labelling it "bug juice", a staple of many a summer camp, but then I thought that would be way to cutesy.
