Steve, I'm worried for your mom. I saw what the storm surge did. Are you in communication with her?

Is it true that this is entirely unprecedented? I find that hard to believe. Maybe it's one of those "human history" things, blinders beyond that.

So freaky to see airport lakes and flooded subways. I'm sure we'll see a lot more of this kind of thing as we humans go on our merry way.

certainly unprecedented in the past couple decades. building on barrier islands is not something i agree with. anybody who has taken twenty minutes to stop by any coastal geomorphology class knows barrier islands are meant to move freely without jetties, groins, boulders, cement, bound rocks, fences and cosmetic dunes. the physical nj coast is a joke. but its where i'm from. fortunately enough, in a time before legal gambling and trump. its who and why i am [if i haven't been corrupted by nyc and sf] from a time and place when there was an old, low brigantine bridge and fisherman's wharf, where now looms a gigantic bridge with a state highway number and harrah's hotel and casino. fortunately the north end of brigantine remains all natural and is the favorite place in the state for me. i could close my eyes to the destruction, find my way to the north end, and call that home.

spoke with family today. mom's a guest off shore and philosophical about the deal. my brother did not evacuate, and remains in brigantine. no electricity, but he has natural gas which is good since its getting cold. he says folks are camping out, grilling food and moving the sand out along with carpets and drywall onto the sidewalks. supposedly smells like low tide all day.

i love seeing the big boats piled and tossed into trees. i couldn't have done that myself. on the other hand, the building my father built in brigantine had sixteen inches of water. my mother's house, which was her mother's house, is beach block on the margate/ventnor border one street from marvin gardens, and has a basement. everything i didn't take west was probably wasted, but don't care. well, excepting my benjamin elac miracord 770h. anyway, those are my thoughts about sandy's landfall on the old hood. interested in hearing what else happened out there.

Well, the chattering pundit class is up in arms. Is it "global warming"? Is it just the usual? Let's ask the insurance industry . . . since 1980, the trend in payouts has increased on an exponential line (adjusted for inflation of course). As soon as their lobbyists have greased enough palms, I reckon we'll have a consensus.

I thought I was posting this here but posted it in a different post accidentally, sorry for the cross...

We are okay after the storm, here near DC it was really pretty scary but we were missed just slightly. The not knowing what to expect and no one had seen a storm come together like this was freaky. I had gas and generator ready but luckily did not lose power or any trees! I worried about my sump pump too I think I will get the back up that uses water pressure if the power is out. More damage with the duracho or whatever that other super storm was at the end of June. I soooo wish this was not the new normal it is scary and frustrating.

Well, on day number nine the power just came back on along with Internet and land line service. Cell service is still out. I'm in western NJ on Schooley's Mountain at elevation of 1000'. We got hit pretty hard. I lost 10 major trees although my house was not not damaged. This all seems so trite as compared to the poor folks who lost everything along the Jersey shore. Just before the storm, on Sunday afternoon, I moved my '65 Bus out of harms way under two large pine trees just to have another tree fall on it. The Bus took a small bump in the head, nothing major. I drained the tank on the Bus as well as the tank on the Bug and my Triumph to run my small generator so at least I could heat the house. Last night the temperature dropped to 18 degrees and today it is snowing. Gas lines have eased somewhat as power is being restored.

This has been a challenge, but it has brought out the goodness in people. Neighbor helping neighbor is great thing.

I feel so sorry for all the displaced and flooded people with lots still without power. Here on Ft Dix we have instructors teaching us that are now homeless. This place is a center for hundreds of FEMA workers to stay and be deployed to New Jersey. There are supposed to be displaced people staying in some of the Army barracks here. And now with the storm coming in, it was 28 this morning, it rained and now turned to snow with a few inches to fall tonight. This just has to be a small hell for those worst hit last week.

What Colin, you are not ready for some nice sub freezing winter weather?

I'm not, as I come up to Seattle in December for the holidays, family stuff and to get experience some of the famous Seattle rainey grey damp weather.
