Pumping gas into your VW will get easier

The gov't is set to begin phasing out the vapor boot on gas pumps...

Why are they doing this? It doesn't make sense. The system obviously works or wouldn't be implemented.
I just don't understand Obama. The vapor is lost during fueling, not just down the road.

The logic is that most newer cars now have systems designed into them that now capture the vapors, thus the boots are no longer needed and as an extra cost to the businesses and consumers can be dropped. I guess I better scare up a charcoal canister for the Ghia, and refresh the one in the bus and put it back to use.

No, the boots have added to hydrocarbon loss with the late model buses that always got sheets of gasoline running down the side of the car.

The vapor recovery in a gas station nozzle used to send the displacement vapors up the gas pump's nozzle. Newer cars can easily swallow the displacement vapors to their own charcoal canisters as you fill up. A good 10% of the CA pumps I visit, have gasoline dribbling off the pump dispensors as I pull them off the pump. An excellent idea, Obama Administration. A light broad boot on the nozzle is good.

What areas have the weird booted pump nozzles? Here in Wisconsin they're typically either completely bare or just have a disc-shaped hood, like this:

Hallelujah! Maybe I will be able to keep the gasoline off the side of my bus (and the ground) now...

We have 'em here in the greater Puget Sound area. Miraculously I seem to get the fuel in the bus and not on the ground but I won't be sad to see them go away. The flat round flexible disc seems ample to me.

Now if only I could pump my own gas in Oregon! :geek:

I've actually done it purely by accident/habit. The attendant was nice about it since I had Washington (aka free-state) plates.

The way I understand it is that as long as they hand the pump to you
you're free to pump, it yourself. They usually can't get the nozzle fully seated so I take it from them and say I'll take care of it. That and they click it to the fastest fill which will kick it off to soon.

I had a terrible showdown with an Oregon Arco gas station attendant in Troutdale, Oregon 2004.

I was lividly explaining to him that I am an American whose property is solely under his own dominion, and that I did not need his help. He was trying to tell me that some stupid local state "law" took precedence over my hard-won historical American right to protect my own property. Shortly thereafter, we left the confines of "philosophy" and descended into the gutter of personal insults.

. . . and I pumped my own gas while he was threatening to call the cops.

Bwahahahaha XD
So, how do you handle old rides like that?
Edit: Let me expand... So how exactly do you tell the gas guys "No, please don't, I'll do it myself."? Do you have to have a spit-polish shine to your ride with a 400 under the hood or something?

"Hey, would you mind if I hold the pump? It tends to fall out of there."
and they usually smile and thank me.
