Gadzooks do they have type 1 engines lying in heaps? I would drive out there just to pick through the scraps of type 1's!

Just looked through the "Hippy Bus" photos on flickr. This guy does alot of the same camping we do. How come we haven't seen him around the Lab? Is he out of the bus universe now? I see he was at Maupin in '10 and Nehalem in '10. Trippy.

Can't wait to hear how Paige does getting this engine.

Paige, you gonna rebuild one on the stand and then swap it out?

This oughta be fun...
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Is this from the yellow camper or the newly-arrived tintop '77 with "Ron Paul For President" on the rear window?

Regardless, I've got no time until Saturday. Randy? Bob?

There's a '78 & '75 out in North Portland...only one has an engine, don't know which one.
Pick-n-pull charges $265 for a whole engine.

Free lunch and beer to engine puller/hauler helpers. This Saturday morning? Never too early for getting drinky! AFTER the engine pull of course. ;-)

Fingers crossed that the whole engine is still there!

Success! Hal contacted me today to tell me the yellow camper WAS still in the pick-n-pull AND its engine was still sitting underneath it. One hell of an afternoon later and that engine is now sitting inside MZ.

This photo stream is of its previous life:

I've contacted these folks to see if they can tell me more about their bus and its engine and to let them know their bus will live on in Miss Zora.

Here's today's progress:

Adam flips through the photo archives.
...Oh no it was that bus!!! I remember them!

What a pity =(

Well, best of luck to the engine. Hopefully it was in good hands before.

$250, running engine, score. Looks viable, not overtly compromised by cobbled. My expertise with the type 4 engines extends to only noting suspicion that the exhaust looks aftermarket.

And I do like the sticker there in the first shot. Mine is on the back window.

man I would be stripping everything off that Bus that could come off! Reflectors, glass, seats, everything.

The bus was pretty stripped and between me, Hal & Joseph, we did pretty good on the other one. And that one still has an engine sitting in it for those who are interested.

So does anyone know the names of owners? And if they post on the WetWesties or the Samba forums?
I sent them an email via their Flickr account but I'm pretty sure that isn't the best way to reach them.

thanks!
