Hal's Engine: Wheee!
Two weeks ago, in a town not very far away....
As I'm sure most of y'all know by now, I had some engine .. issues .. with my Bus on this years Deschutes RendesVW in Maupin. A clacky noise from the rockers that led to a 5-1/2 hour parts run to Portland and back and a full Saturday R&R-ing the passenger-side cylinder head. Got about ten miles towards home on Sunday and decided the safest thing to do was get a tow.
Bummer:
Goin' on the hook:
No real progress to speak of for a while after that, needed some time away from the Bus (and things mechanical) to recharge myself. Not only from the two days of Maupin that I spent working/worrying/gathering parts for the Bus, but the two-and-a-half weeks before Maupin where I spent most of my free time working on the Bus getting ready to go. Rear brakes (everything including the backing plates), rear wheel bearings (1 side), CV joints, cleaning, packing .. I was just burned out.
Finally got re-energized enough to start tackling the engine pull Tuesday & Wednesday evening, spent Thursday evening at the Lab with justgimmiecoffee & MissZora. This evening, engine out! w00t!
Engine. Gads it's greazy...
I'll be posting updates and things when they happen. If anyone in Portland might have some time tomorrow afternoon/evening-ish (yeah, I know it's Independence Day) to help me lift it onto the mini-bench I nailed together under the carport, that would rock.

Somewhere, in Belgium, a baby cries. A dog barks, once in the night.

Hal, if you are down to splitting the case by tomorrow July 6th, I'd like to stop by in the afternoon before the Lucky Lab engagement @ 700PM. But I forget where you are located. If you're not At Work or sumpin . . .

I'm off work tomorrow, but don't think I'm going to be to case-splitting yet .. depends on what (and how much) I get done when I'm home from work this evening. Plans for tomorrow have me going with MissZora to Trafton's shop on a parts-scavenging trip in the morning, and quite possibly an additional trip with her to look at a '64 Beetle that's for sale. Then some time at the house and the Lucky Lab in the evening...Amskeptic wrote:Hal, if you are down to splitting the case by tomorrow July 6th, I'd like to stop by in the afternoon before the Lucky Lab engagement @ 700PM. You forgot where I live? C'mon, it's only been four years since that one time you were here. I'm PM you.

Good luck with your engine build Hal.
It is funny how much work and love we will put into a bus. If it were any other vehicle most would just get rid of it.

I'd love to, just for the durability. But unless I find a winning lottery ticket in the street, it ain't gonna happen.Bleyseng wrote:Gonna get a Raby cam and lifter set???
Split the case this evening, found something *very* interesting going on with my #2 exhaust lifter. Got too dark to take pictures, and I don't want to spoil the surprise for Colin .. so the details are gonna be under wraps until after the Lucky Lab gathering tomorrow nite.
