It Runs...again.

Post by mechanicjay » Sun Jun 10, 2018 8:56 pm

I've been slowly plugging away at things since Colin's visit LAST summer: viewtopic.php?f=76&t=13396#p226298

After several visits to Ken at the BusCo in Woodinville, I finally got all the pieces I needed to put the intake system back together. Put in a lot of hours the last couple weekends to get there. Lots of figuring out vacuum lines, where this goes, where that goes etc, from the box of parts.

Today was "lets try and start it day". After running to the store for the last few fittings I needed to finish up the fuel system and new pump (now all wired in nicely with a relay), my 7 year old and I made the final fuel line connection. We put a gallon or so of gas in the tank. I jumpered the fuel pump to prime the system, hit the key, crank, crank, put...put.. p.p.p...vrooom!

After two years of being in pieces... First try, 3 seconds on cranking. That was damned satisfying.

After tracking down a major vacuum leak (you mean the brake booster host needs to actually be attached!?), It idles with relative smoothness about 1200 RPM.

Going to dig into the whole tune-up procedure in the next the couple days.

The one thing that worries me some is the EA Engine that came in the bus, with it's stock SVDA distributor. If I'm reading things right, this should be timed at 0 degrees at idle and 27 degrees at 3500 RPM. I'm also confident that this distributor is not really meant to go with the set of stock carbs I rebuilt, which given the reading I've been doing may be an issue.

I'll report back when I have news!

Just for the record here is everything that's been done to the engine over the last 18 months:
Push rod tube seals
valve cover gaskets
oil pressure switch
oil cooler seals
bought and rebuilt stock carburetors
Tracked down 73-74 specific intake.
Tracked down 73-74 specific throttle linkage
Tracked down a charcoal canister.
Installed New vacuum lines EVERYWHERE.
Replaced fuel level sender.
Installed new electric fuel pump, with a relay!
made new wiring harnesses for the carbs.
All new fuel lines.
All new rubber joiners on fuel tank vents.
New Points, condenser, rotor
New Exhaust manifold gaskets (the copper rings)
New intake gaskets.
Fresh oil and new filter.

Is that enough? This thing should be READY to go.

A stock EA came out of a 411/914 with Djet so the dizzy would have been a dual vacuum/retard advance mechanical. It will have two ports with the port on the top front being for the advance and the lower back one for the retard. Best to time it at the 27 degrees at 3500 rpms hoses off.

You know, now that you say that, I think I knew it. I did a search of the VW part number on the distributor a while back and I must be mis-remembering what the result of that search was.

As I was thinking about this further last night, I had a moment of realization, which is what you suggest -- set 27 degrees @ 3500 rpm -- then let the idle timing fall where it may and deal with it....

Similarly, after batting timing issues with my old ford pickup, I came upon the following procedure: Set timing at idle to clean up emissions for the sniffer, drive home, reset timing for max advance so it doesn't drive like a pig.

Congratulations! Yes to the above, but you will want a retard can when the idle speed can't be adjusted low enough and still ensure healthy airflow.

It appears these were the two stock distributors in 1973 and 1974 running those dual Solex Solex 32-34 PDSIT-2carbs that Colin loves so much! lol

Notice the the vacuum specs are the same between both distributor DVDA vacuum canisters. Also (Colin) notice how much the retard is! :)
