3,000...nope, make that 4,000 miles on the road, since IAC !

When Colin was leaving me after 2 great days of work back in April, I had one final question: "What do you think about me taking this bus on a road trip?" I pointed at my '78 Westy we had just finished test driving. Colin looked at me, and said, "Ian, I'd drive this bus anywhere."
Well, that was just what I wanted to hear. I packed her up in early July, and headed up the east coast, stopping to see old friends and make new ones along the way. Hostel in the Forest, outside of Brunswick, Ga.was a great place, Edisto Island, S.C., Savannah, Ga., Charleston, Charlotte, Floyd, Va., Winchester, Va., the Poconos, the Catskills, the Hudson River Valley, Delaware River country...I've been all over in this wondrous machine! These buses make people happy...that's one thing I have learned to be a fact! I get more waves than Diamond Head beach! Heading towards home in a week or so...this has been a great experience!

It is an addiction. Be careful, you could unplug from "responsible life" forever . . .

First night's stop: the wonderful Hostel in the Forest, outside of Brunswick, Georgia. If you are a hippie at heart, and want great vegetarian food, want to meet great folks and sleep in a tree house...this is the place for you! VW buses are particularly in favor, as they don't get to see too many anymore!

After stopping in Savannah and Charleston, I headed over to Edisto Island, SC. One of my favorite places in the South, there are many oak lined forest roads of packed white sand. It's a beautiful drive.

In 4,000 miles of driving, I saw only 2 other VW buses on the road-both Bay Windows. I saw two Vanagons, also. It is a dismal thought to think that the day MAY come when we will no longer be able to see one of these on a highway, only in a museum, or parade. Get you bus working and take it on the road! Colin has said,"If you want to learn about your bus, drive it!" I learned more in this past 5 weeks about my bus than the entire previous year of tinkering with it in the neighborhood. With the exception of Colin's IAC visit, of course. His visit gave me the confidence to plan and undertake this trip, in a 35 year old vehicle. It was an enlightening and wonderful experience, and I met many terrific people. This bus was on Edisto Beach, but I could not locate the owner.
