Well, Damn

Post by mentalQtip » Fri Sep 14, 2012 6:08 pm

Ok. Working to quiet the exhaust down, so I was under there loosening, shoving, tightening. Went for a short drive. "Maybe a bit better, but still something not right". So I'm under there with a stethoscope and not finding anything. Get out and stare at the bus and hear the sound like metal falling on metal and bouncing around. Shut the bus down fast. More staring. Start it up again and no sound but now lots of gray smoke. Bumping the gas creates clouds of gray smoke. Well, damn.
and this is the engine Colin and I put in and struggled to get running.
My first thought is; "This is gonna need pulling the engine again".
Thoughts as to what happened? Something broke while idling?

Thanks

Joseph

Does it run any different with the noise? Look in the valve covers for something in there. Try draining the oil and see if you can find something. I wouldn't run it.

A) Engine ingested a foreign object. Damaged rings/cylinder walls, maybe valve. Can live with it if it has successfully passed through.

B) Dropped a valve guide. Pull valve cover and look very carefully at each valve/guide. Note the normal position of each guide. If you see one that has migrated up under a valve retainer, it causes noise and smoke. Pull head.

Ok. I pulled the plugs and its running pretty rich. The 1/2 are dry all over but the 3/4 plugs are both looking pretty oily in the threads and #3 looks to have tiny bits of metal on the washer. What should I make of this?
Compression #1/140
#2/140
#3/125
#4/135
Looked at the valve/guides and saw nothing amiss. All looked the same.

Based on the above I'm guessing the next step is pulling the engine and the heads?

Did you drop a nut into the fan? Oh mercy. That compression looks good, if something was terribly amiss it wouldn't, other than a valve guide. Eh?
Drain the oil and look for bits.

What kind of engine is this?
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
