NOS Crossover Pipe for 75-78 Bus

Post by locoqueso » Sun Apr 08, 2012 4:54 pm

In an effort to keep my 78 bus stock, I picked up a NOS crossover pipe (021 251 503A) for the exahaust system. This summer I plan to replace the exhaust lines behind the heat exchanges so I was very happy to find it. My existing crossover pipe is a rusted mess. The new pipe in such great shape that I almost feel bad about installing it.

Why on earth someone isn't willing to reproduce these is beyond me. EVERYONE would love to get their hands on one and, so far, only crazy cheese has found the holy grail. Seriously, if your entrepreneurial, take that fine specimen to someone who can copy it and you'll both be rich (well, maybe).

That's a cast piece, isn't it?

It is a cast piece, but there's no reason a functional replica couldn't be made with flanges and tubing. It'd take a bit of engineering to replicate the muffler mounting part but even that shouldn't be difficult.

I am half tempted to get another used pipe for my bus and keep this one so it could be replicated. If I do, I'll need to get another before Colin gets here in August. I'd like to get the exhaust replaced while he's here.

Get another used one and see if you can use this new one for a template. Lousy fit is such a scourge, this is your chance to build up a wood buck with all holes aligned properly and see if a muffler welding craftsman could actually do a decent job of it. The cast end pieces could be used to make dies.

So, I didn't use these GERMAN VW heat exchangers on my pseude-'78

. . . because they are HEAVIER than my comparable DANSK HE's.

[great thinking!!]

Yep. I hate the '78 exhaust's unique characteristics when it comes to finding parts, but the little stock nazi on my shoulder pokes me whenever I think about trying to do a change-over to '72-'74 style.

I am going to try every-other-year paint maintenance on my stock FI exhaust to see if deterioration can be stopped. And by the time I find out that no it can't, there won't be any parts to find . . .

I was searching through old posts and found one I made about a NOS crossover exhaust pipe I picked up in 2012. I debated installing it on my bus or keeping it pristine so it could be replicated. I never followed up with the results so I wanted to provide a late update...

I never installed the NOS crossover pipe. I eventually found a good used replacement and installed that on my bus instead. I've kept the original stored away in case I ever get around to doing something with it.

I didn't mention this in the original post, but the previous owner wrote "Do Not Sell" with a marker along the side of the pipe. I guess they changed their mind at some point. I'll try use that note as a reminder for myself. Eventually I will get around to doing something with it.
