Colin's visit, Satchmo's visit
Colin stopped by for a visit with me and my 71 bus last week for half a day. I was very unprepared, but the bus was grateful, in dire need of a tuneup. The most distressing news is that exhaust valves were tight all around, and some of them have no adjustment remaining. Time for a root canal, errr..., engine drop and head work. New valves too? Yikes. In other words, don't drive on freeways, stay local, drive gently, watch closely. The 'spare' bus, which became the 'main' bus, might be non-op soon too. sigh.
Colin discovered the (?) distributor had a problem with... help me here Colin... the weights, the something advance not working... ah, memory. He fixed it. I can hear it working now when I drive. I missed a lot of the action out in the driveway because I spent much of the visit searching for mechanic's paperwork I could not find, so frustrating, such a waste of my time (it turned up several days later).
I need to replace fuel lines. To replace a vacuum line (already done by Satchmo). To scrape the underside cooling fins. To fill the tires (done).
Colin set timing, adjusted valves, changed oil. He lubed the troublesome door lock. He gouged out the rust under the windshield and used some rust catalyzing primer and black RTV to seal the leak that had finally penetrated the interior.
He noticed a gap between the muffler and tailpipe, parts not fitting, holes not aligning. We tried to make it fit but he ended up using some metal strapping to collar the gap. I notice louder engine sounds now... the tailpipe fix? or the valve adjustment?
Thanks Colin! the bus needed you.
I noticed that Satchmo Tim is now listed as living in a neighboring town, so I wrote to him. I stopped by and met him and Mary last weekend, and he came over next day to help me with the other bus, the 74 Westy. He took out the starter motor. It tested non operational with a lot of looseness and play to the shaft. Rusty old thing, time to order a new one. It had died one day when it would not stop grinding away, even when I removed the key from the ignition. Churga churga churga churga churga... I could not pull off the battery cable, and where the heck are my tools? When it finally stopped I assumed the battery had drained, but maybe the starter died first. Tim removed the battery too, and I still need to take it for testing and/or replacement. Thanks Tim! Super big THANK YOU.
The 74 Westy has been sitting with a lot of new and refurbished parts inside the engine. It will be nice to get it going again, to drive while the 71 gets some work done to it.

Better be the valve adjustment .... more clackity clacky is good. I am right behind you with tightening valves running out of adjustment room. Looks like this thing is getting head work too!Birdibus wrote:Colin stopped by for a visit

Good Luck with the '74, satchmo embarrasses me with his generosity of time and spirit.

He donated a lot of cool tools to the cause too, which I use frequently, and am forever indebted.

Re: Colin's visit, Satchmo's visit
TRUE STORY:
While camping, I asked satchmo for some medical advice.
I said: "In the morning I feel like a wigwam and in the evening, I feel like a teepee. What's wrong with me?"
He said: "You're two tents. Take these little pink pills and call me in the morning."
sorry

Glasseye, we should attempt to compile the very worst of the worst jokes, jokes that show filthy bad taste, horrible lack of basic intelligence, nimbus clouds of giant ego, painfully small wit, you get the idea, then we could edit it down to a Holiday Inn lounge night from hell ...
