Post by 72Hardtop » Fri Sep 09, 2011 9:30 pm

Anyone here purchase a Mallory from Aircooled.net? Looking to buy one but I heard they weren't what they used to be. Looking to get the Mallory 4554101 centrifugal only w/optical pick up & grey/grey springs.

I'd pass on it unless you can find one that was manufactured several years ago. The one I bought for my Camper Special has scatter of about four degrees at the upper rpm. Their quality control and tolerances have gone to crap.

also, despite what you might think, it's not plug it and forget it. The middle plug tends to disintegrate and you do need to change caps every 15k miles or so.

"Middle plug"? Center coil wire? Does the brush inside the cap eat up and spew carbon dust?

A dual point distributor is not needed on a stock bug engine. This is a high RPM stable system and VWs dont spin high RPMs. Just use stock points or a Pertronix, Which I think is best. I've been running 2 of them of my vehicles for over 10 years with no problems at all.
Take care,
