The old engine is on the ground. It will take me a few days to put the new one back in.

I need a new starter. What do you guys recommend?

buy a starter rebuilt BY BOSCH - not one of those 'lifetime warranty' BS units from Kragen/etc. they will honor the warranty and you WILL be swapping them out every other year.

it costs more up front, but not in the near short term. there's generally two groups of people - those who already learned that lesson and those who are about to. :flower:

If you have one locally, I'd recommend getting your original starter rebuilt by a trusted automotive electric shop. Probably costs the same, but at least you'll know you have the original quality part instead of the aftermarket crap airkooledchris referenced.

Good lord! They must put those on their $80,000 Vanagons. Those GoWesty folks live in a completely different universe from the one I occupy. Not saying anything negative, I just can't relate to their reality.

Their market seems to be people who want a Vanagon, but with modern speed/power and new-carish reliability (i.e. they don't want to work on their car). The next market is people who do want to work on their van, but treat it like their big-dollar hobby. The syncro-westy boys who go whole-hog with super-upgrades, ultimate off-road, back-woods capable vehicles. Seen a few of those on the Ol' Samba...

id call your local VW parts supplier first, since there may be a core charge and if you don't have to ship your core back - you should save a little money.

try even your local VW dealership, you never know if they might have a good one still on the shelf.

if that fails, try the usual suspects. busdepot has 'bosch rebuilt' starters I believe (in addition to the cheaper 'rebuild bosch (but not BY bosch) units)
