I've always just removed the engine. Doesn't seem to matter either way, but I can imagine both combined are quite heavy. Something to consider.

What difference does that make? It's all on a jack anyway, it's not like someone is out there wrestling the engine out of their Bus by hand. The tranny only weighs 94 pounds, you really aren't adding all that much weight in the grand scheme of things. Whatever way works for you I guess. I find it much easier and less work to remove and install them as a unit. I've never needed anyone else's help to remove or install them together.

It makes 94 lbs difference.
I DID say it doesn't seem to matter either way...

That and you and I are not built like a brick shithouse.

I guess you have to be BAMF to use that method :geek:

I just use two floor jacks. One under the engine, and one under the trans. Slick as anything. I'm not a BAMF by a long shot and I've never had any help with my multiple combined engine/tranny removals and replacements.

It does seem elegant to pull them out together. I did find the whole mating experience to be stressful with me on my back under the bus and my girlfriend trying to move it in place from behind, especially when it didn't want to go in at first.

This isn't free speech Covelo, I don't think you can write that sort of thing in Type 2.

My personal preference, alone or with others, is to R & R the engine only. I think my CV joints and boots prefer that too. In the time it takes to remove 12 CV bolts, clean and wrap the CVs, disconnect the ground strap and reverse wires and clean the flanges, I have the two 15mm bolts outta there and the transaxle resting on the whatever, boof, engine out.
see my laundromat parking lot video engine pull in the rain! watch friendly people come up and ask questions! watch the crabby mechanic lasso one of the friendly people with an oil soaked engine seal!

you can pull the engine alone in a parking lot by driving on wheel up on a curb and jacking up the other side onto whatever. Then with a handful of hand tools, a skate board and a bottle jack, The engine is on the ground as fast as you can go. Pulling the whole thing is messy and time consuming. Prolly not good for CV's and boots and gawd it's a pain in the ass to balance while jacking it back into place.
Tip for getting splines to mesh with the clutch disc.
Put transmission in gear. Prevent one wheel from turning with a wedge or whatever, while allowing the other wheel to rotate. If you get the engine almost home and just can't get that last 1/2 inch or so, give the free wheel a kick while shoving and wiggling the engine in.

You can't. I used to babble bs back when I was young and manic. No such video exists.
