Roadside rescue

Haven't had the Squareback out very much this year so decided to take it to "Cars and Coffee" about a leisurely hour drive away. Last time out had a weird occurance that disabled me 1/4 mile from home and didn't like what I heard so I pushed it home. I discovered one post of the distributor cap inside blew apart. New cap, new rotor I was back in business.
Guys, you all have provided me the courage and stronger confidence to dive in and do some of this myself. There was a time I would have called for help. Not this time.
Fast forward to a few days ago heading to coffee /car meet up. Got about 10 miles from home on a beautiful Sunday morning and began to lose power, studdering, a little popping and dash lights. Coasted to the side of the road.
I could smell it... Engine deck was hot. Coil was super hot, generator was really hot. Hmmm. Let it cool, restarted and turned it towards home. Got about a mile, same thing. Let cool for 30 minutes and tried again. Same result. Opened up the distributor, removed the rotor and there was the small plastic piece of the distributor wedged between the plate and the base. Put it all back together, started it and drove to local car show...won the sponsors award...and there were some pretty awesome rides there...and the little Type lll takes the prize.
