Ghia gas pedal
'70 Ghia..the gas pedal is hanging up and not returning reliably, resulting in runaway idle. On busses i usually add a second sprin g below pedal to make up for sloppiness..but im not familiar with Ghia...
any suggestions
It has an 'S' shaped terminal on the cable where it interacts with the pedal..looks like a primitive arrangement..but i guess it worked at some point

Re: Ghia gas pedal
Shoot some PB Blaster on the assembly up front as something must be hanging up or its dirty. The petal assembly gets full of crap over the years.

Re: Ghia gas pedal
You're positive the trouble is at the pedal? The throttle butterfly on cheapo carbs can hang up too (I've had it happen). I've also had an errant vacuum line occasionally interfere with the throttle arm in the engine bay (on a Ghia, even!). Just saying, check for other possibilities if you haven't already.

Re: Ghia gas pedal
Make sure the throttle pedal assembly isn't getting caught in the mat or carpet as well..

Re: Ghia gas pedal
Colin recommended ATF as a lube for the pedal assembly, after you get the goo out. My Vanagon's was very sticky...as in all or nothing, no finesse possible. A toothebrush and ATF seems to have done it.

Re: Ghia gas pedal
ATF and toothbrush...seems to have restored some zip to the return action

Re: Ghia gas pedal
He just rec'd that on my Vanagon return spring as well, trouble is I don't have any ATF since all our vehicles are manual! Have to pick some up or steal from a friend.

Re: Ghia gas pedal
I drilled and added a spring at the pedal...i could not find anything that returned the pedal AT the pedal..only the carb spring???....so thus the extra spring.
As it turns out, that was not the main problem, but did need to be done...cant say im much of a fan of the 'S' style cable terminal;
