Gas sloshes due to centrifugal force...I think? Physics was a long time ago.

I bought a set of studs just for the strainer repair. I can't remember what they are called, but they are larger on one end than the other...drill, tap, and glue in. It was easy peasy last time.

OK, I need a committed answer to the gas slosh. IF you have liquid gas leaking + smell on LEFT turns, it will be in the evaporative lines / expansion tank. If it is AFTER the left turn, then it might also include the return path to the tank.
People glaze over when pressed on eradicating fuel smells under the boot of Type 1 and Type 3 cars. I do not recall if any of these later VWs use the "criss-cross" fuel evap lines found on the buses. The left tank evap nipple actually feeds the right side separator and the right tank evap nipple crosses over and feeds the left separator. Thus, a hard left turn fills the right side evap tube but does not overwhelm the separator. After the turn, the fuel merely drains back into the tank from the line.

I wish it was easier to post pictures. I can literally see gas sloshing from the filler neck down the outside of the car for miles after every fill up.

Are there any vent hose deals coming into the filler pipe up near the cap? I am currently stuck on the gas cap as your problem. Is it threaded with a ratchet inside the cap, or is it just two dog teeth that slip under the edge of the filler pipe and ramp the cap down as it turns barely 90*?

Just jumping in here.... Yes, there is a huge one..... but it would have to be the cap if it's outside the car, wouldn't it?

My thoughts as well...unless I also have a hole in the filler somewhere. My cap is the ratcheting type. The dog tooth ones are readily available as VW brand. New ratcheting ones are also readily available. Are the new ones the same as the '74?

Your gas cap does have its rubber seal, right?

It has a seal, but the seal is hard like plastic. Should it be rubbery?

Still no go on the fuel cap...but, I finally replaced my horrendous driver side window regulator.

Talk about a huge PITA job...

The new regulator is from BD, and the quality is...well...crap. It is crunchy, sticky, and balky. I oiled it up and it is better, but still a disappointment. I guess it was just on shelf too long.

Oh well, still much better than the old one.
