Paint code

How do you tell for sure the paint code used on a Beetle. I have a '71 and always thought it was Clementine Orange. An overspray on a fender done by a PO was a different orange...and when I bought some touch up paint using the Clementine code, it matched the overspray and not the original paint of my bug. Is there a code on the body/sticker/something that will tell me which orange was used? Thanks.

M-codes they call them. Samba must have tons of articles on the subject. There is even a website out there that automatically decodes them.

Also check Samba for paint code chips, you can often color match that way.

In the trunk...like up front I'm assuming. Where? I looked in the easy to see places and didn't find it. Stamp, sticker, what? Thanks guys.

Metal plate.. like on a bus. Up where the windshield washer tank is/was located behind the spare.
