Wow, this IS a sticky topic. (not a "sticky")....
Lenny Bruce had the right idea, America get off your moral high horse, and stop with the double standard. Everywhere you look, breasts floppin out on ads, machine guns on every TV channel, obscene consumeristic attitudes flowing..it makes the simple impact of an arrangement of letters somewhat less important. But strangely enough, those arrangements of letters do have an entire cultural history behind them, which invokes a common response. Hell, the swatika was a symbol of good luck for thousands of years before unkel Adloph had has day. So what if I put an ancient pic of a Hindu swastika as my avatar? What cultural filters would be activated? And is anyone really DAMAGED by reading the word "fuck"? I know there is damaged caused by the countless scenes of violence projected into each living room....
It's weird because ultimately it's just dots of color and sound vibrations, and we humans interpret them as we will....
Personally, I found the avatar very crude, but thought provoking. I think we have bigger fish to fry in this day and age.

That's awful. I find Buddhism offensive, what with all the Nam Myoho Renge Kyo and whatnot.

Peace!

Some can be. 12 year-old reading a hidden letter in mom's old make-up case
". . . when we fucked I thought Heaven and Earth had merged.
love from your 'plumber' HA Who would ever guess! see ya next week, new tub is due Tuesday"

Ultimately your daughter is a conglomeration of amino acids, but what a beautiful array of amino acids. . . smart too! You'll find out with the help of words she organizes as she sees fit.

I liked the avatar, George Carlin Summarized. But I wished it could be discriminating where it showed up. Which it couldn't.

Zblair, ya know it never occurred to me that little ones would be looking over mom or dad's shoulder or granny & grampa's for that matter. Once it was brought to my attention the right thing was really quite apparent to me! I believe it was apparent to you at that point also as your avatar was changed fairly promptly.
A given society sets its own standards. A new society grows and standards evolve. I for one will be more concious of this and will self censor for the sake of kids looking at the internet with a parent. . . because it's the right thing to do.
