The rear (front is fron) mounting bolt on my carb is stripped. I think this is causing a vac leak and making it so my idle stays high.
Two questions:
1. Whats' the proper / best way to fix it?
2. Would I be able to stick a slightly smaller bolt through there and use a nut to hold it together until I do a proper fix?

I had the same problem with the Bocar carb on my '71 Beetle. I don't know if it's proper, but I bought a hex-head bolt of the correct size at Autozone and used my Dremel to cut away part of the casting so the bolt head and a washer would sit flush against the top of the carb mounting flange.
I'm saving my pennies to have the original Solex carb re-bushed, but this is working fine for now.

Isnt that bolt really a stud ? i.e. removable ?
Sand both surfaces flat (carb and manifold) to ensure a leak-free meeting of the two. [flanges usually warped from wing-dings overtightening those bolts]

Yes, but I think he has the same problem I did - the threads in the carb body itself are stripped.dingo wrote:Isnt that bolt really a stud ? i.e. removable ?

(years ago) I pulled the stud, bought a slightly smaller dia. bolt/nut and bolted it in place. Worked fine.
