The nut on the front of the lower alternator bolt left us and the bolt worked its way backward into the belt. The "fix" here.
Next trip we'll take some hardware along.

Dude! I've been loving the blog posts that you've been posting on Facebook. Nice work with the hippy fix, and I appreciate your asterisked information at the bottom. :)

Re: Cross-threading as a Temporary Fix
To be clear, I'm not proud of what I did, and don't regard it as acceptable. Immediately after I realized we were crossthreading and not tightening that nut, my thinking was that if I took it off now, the bolt's threads will be too gummed-up to accept a nut of the proper thread.
Mental note: next trip, bring along some common fasteners and tap & die set.

I super glued the generator nut on a beetle in Battle Mountain Nevada and it got me home and then some.

Re: Cross-threading as a Temporary Fix
Yeah, well, I sat on the back bumper of a beetle with a frozen and stuck accelerator cable (ice in the tube), operating the carburetor throttle butterfly with my icy little fingers, trying to keep my pant legs out of the generator/fan belt, while the driver steered the car through the ice and snow. It got us home too, but it was only across town. Not sure what I was thinking at the time. Or maybe I wasn't thinking at all.Randy in Maine wrote: ↑Thu Mar 15, 2018 11:08 amI super glued the generator nut on a beetle in Battle Mountain Nevada and it got me home and then some.

Re: Cross-threading as a Temporary Fix
Ha! I sat on the bumper of a bug with a lost accelerator cable barrel nut in Joshua Tree last year. We made it about twenty feet, just enough to get off the main throughway, and then I fell off when he dumped the clutch in second…satchmo wrote: ↑Thu Mar 15, 2018 1:46 pmYeah, well, I sat on the back bumper of a beetle with a frozen and stuck accelerator cable (ice in the tube), operating the carburetor throttle butterfly with my icy little fingers, trying to keep my pant legs out of the generator/fan belt, while the driver steered the car through the ice and snow. Re: Cross-threading as a Temporary Fix
Thus behaving like a proper air-cooled Sears lawn mower, the power was cut.
If I am on the bumper (!),nobody gets to dump the clutch more than once.
