Oregon Eclipse 2017 - Bus camp?

Post by tristessa » Fri Sep 16, 2016 7:55 pm

Total solar eclipse passes over Oregon on August 21st, and the edge of the totality zone passes a couple miles south of Maupin. Campout?

I contacted deschutestrout over at the Oasis Resort (who puts on the RendesVW every year) about possible group space. He said things are filling up fast at the resort and the campground both, but that he's probably got room if we can put a group together and to let him know.

Kubler and Mike Boell both said they were interested when I saw them yesterday, I'm game as well. Anyone? Xevin? Bob? Gypsie? Chachi? Don't take it personally if I didn't name you specifically, just rattling names off the top of my head .. or maybe pulling them out of my arse. :cyclopsani:

I'd make the drive down from the Seattle area. It's still a little far off to know what my plans will be next summer, but it would be pretty cool to experience this with the bus crowd. I've been through a couple other eclipses in other parts of the country and it's a pretty neat experience.

Heads right through the south half of the MT Hood NF, I know of lots of good camps down there. That would be weird to experience, and not expect it. Bet it would be disturbing.

I live in Madison, WI and the last decent eclipse we had here was May 10, 1994. It was an annular eclipse, not total, so the moon was a bit farther from earth at the moment and only covered 94.31% of the sun when it was centered leaving a "ring of fire" of 5.69% of the sun. The eclipse peak spot was south and east from here (Michigan/Indiana border) and it happened at almost exactly noon here and things got pretty damned dark!

This eclipse will be total so the moon will be close enough to earth when it happens that it will cover the entire sun. The peak eclipse spot is in western Kentucky. Things will be totally dark, not just pretty dark. I might have to try to make it there. It would be eerie!

The peak eclipse spot is right where Land Between the Lakes National Recreation area is and there just so happens to be a planetarium there which would be cool. The pitch dark eclipse "totality" there will last about 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Camp sites can be booked no more than 6 months ahead (2/21/17) at this website: https://www.landbetweenthelakes.us/reservations/

I'm down, I also got rung up Trouty to get a spot!

We'll see what will end up happening / how many people will be joining me, as it would probably end up being a minor fam get-together.
