Had this itinerary not been so interrupted, it was actually doing pretty well as far as efficiency, and the fun quotient was quite good, too. I was In Love With It All after sunny warm Missoula (!), Maupin, Portland all a youse, Los Alamos, the beauty was intoxicating and the people were good interesting folk (thanks again, jtauxe) and my bus was running splendidly (repair costs: $274.20 oem heat exchanger, new license light assy, new tail light seals).
I do look forward to a non-jarring 2010 Itinerary with the BobD. I might try a little local run with the Squareback in the New England area to keep some of the mileage off the BobD and to exercise the Squareback a bit. Would we all agree that a BobD that finishes up at just under 50,000 miles is still a pretty fresh vehicle??

Screw the original mileage, you only live once. Unless yer gonna sell it. With you at the wheel, that bus will always be new.
Otherwise, enjoy it. Who knows, it may be worthless in the future once gasoline is replaced by sunlight etc. Now is now.

Colin, you of all people have always railed against the trailer queen that never gets driven right? These cars were made to last right? You will be vigilant to the n'th degree with the maintenance and upkeep of BobD right? Seriously, not to sound like an A-hole, but quit whining about racking up the miles on that bus and just drive the damn thing.
Love,
Jasan

My planned retirement is to go senile and enjoy my first childhood in a nice neighborhood retirement center. Toothpicks and Elmer's Glue, I will build a facsimile of the George Washington Bridge followed by the United States Capitol. Then I'll do jigsaw puzzles I guess, Famous Republicans of the Late Twentieth Century, and the nurses will have to calm me down.hambone wrote:Retirement?!?!?!??!?!!? Since when?

Whether or not you drive it a lot in the future, I agree that as of now, at under 50,000 miles, it's still a pretty fresh vehicle.Amskeptic wrote: Would we all agree that a BobD that finishes up at just under 50,000 miles is still a pretty fresh vehicle??

Being a true Canadian I believe in The Value of Compromise. If it were mine, I'd drive it "somewhat" - so as to enjoy it as much as possible as long as possible.
Naturally, this justifies owning another vehicle...

I'd say it would want me to drive the BobD all across the land making sure to perform the thousands of gladly performed little pull-off-the-road tasks it once enjoyed helping to keep it clean and maintained for no matter the years or miles. What does a Volkswagen bus know about asset protection and investment? The BobD knows little but staring at walls and brief little forays into the day.midatlanticys wrote:What would the RW want you to be doing with BobD?

Just trying a little tough love. So you bought the BobD as an investment? Really? The bottom could fall out of these vehicles at any time. Prime example, the E34 BMW. ~$50k new, now worth $2-4k thirteen years later. Maybe if the BobD had been stored in a climate controlled warehouse since it rolled off the line, but it's not like it's brand new as far as mileage. Low miles sure, but not that low.Amskeptic wrote:One man's "whine" is another man's careful consideration of retirement assets.Westy78 wrote:quit whining about racking up the miles on that bus and just drive the damn thing.
