... Wish Me Luck (upd-NoWorries)

Post by Amskeptic » Tue Aug 01, 2017 11:48 pm

I thought I was going to escape it, but I actually drove into it. Tomorrow 's forecast is for record temperatures, 113* highs with plenty of challenging hills on CA 299. Sorry, valves, valve seats, #1 exhaust valve guide.
This engine's first extreme heat test is tomorrow.
Yeah, then poom! 54* in Eureka CA in the AM, a high of 65* .

Posts and photos of Seattle on down shall, must, occur.

With every window in the house wide open and the fan's all on - the family room was 84* in the late afternoon. We were nearly immobile with heat exhaustion. :p

Hopefully the overall slower top speeds of the 299 will help keep those temps in check. Redding to Willow Creek are certainly going to sustain 100+ temps until you get much closer to the coast. The last 30 miles to the coast should drop a degree per mile, head temps rejoice.

A quick valve adjustment pretty much right after this post, and off we go. It is already 97* in Redding, and it is 9:38 AM.

Been there, done that! It was hotter in Central California than Phoenix last week when I drove it, and it's hotter in Oregon right now as I wait for my two gallon water bottle to fill up...

Glad my bus isn't as sissy as we are!

Try Suriname for awhile as its normally 95F and 95% humidity by 10AM so most people take a nap at 4:30 to 6 pm and then come out as it's much cooler at night.

Pshaw. Death Valley citizens always say that those Phoenix types like to brag it up but they wilt when the temperature hits 127*. They clutch their Suns parasols and faint into their air-conditioned SUVS. Besides, you get used to it day after day after day.
I do NOT get used to 113* in Redding and only 62* in Eureka just hours later. That is cruel. That makes my water jugs collapse. That makes me collapse in shivering disbelief. Chloe hardly cares. Today's tippy top CHT after a 4,000 ft climb at the border, 384*. Average hill climb 375* Cruising rpm level 364* Ambient temps 100-113*. Car did a lot better than I didididididididd.

I would wilt too at 127F! Hottest I have been in was in India for a wedding in June, 114F and we were inside this wedding hall that was soo hot with the smoke from the brazer blazing away.
I drove home from Lucky Lab in that 95F heat going 65-70mph with 375-405F CHT's and oil hit 230F for a while but gas mpg was only 13.

So, I was worried about my little brown cow out there in the broiling heat having to gallop for extended periods amongst the trucks and hill-climbing lanes under the relentless sun. Naaaaaaaaah, did fine:

Image

Image

It was hot down on through Eugene on the way to Medford, the hottest spot in the northwest yesterday:

Image

62 mph @ 3,700 rpm or so:

Image

Coming down the hill:

Image

Image

Beautiful downtown Grants Pass, it's about zoning:

Image

Here at the border, I recalled some earlier years chasing warmth and dryness, but today was *glorious*:

Image

Image

I had to filter the heck out of these California pictures due to haze:

Image

I was expecting more snow on Shasta after that winter everybody has been telling me about:

Image

Sorry about your little traffic problem over there, folks, we're good over here:

Image

Another endless construction project still endlessly projecting:

Image

But, wow! the best water level I have seen of Shasta Lake since 1986:

Image

I took photographs of everybody playing in the dirt down there a couple of years ago . . . not this year:

Image

Redding CA was 113* with a "feels like" temperature of 129*

Image

That is 233* on the left valve cover:

Image

. . . and only 207* on the right valve cover, the side that I NEED to stay cool with that cracked #1 exhaust valve guide boss:

Image

A little toasty in here, but not too bad considering the banzai run on I-5. I didn't photograph the crankcase/oil temp reading but it was around 233*:

Image

I will add some comparison shots of Shasta later, but I need to get the laundry out of the dryer and hit the road to the frozen far west of Eureka.

Wheeeeww that was a nasty one. I bailed off I-5 south of Eugene; my cabin floor mat clocked 129* on the IR thermometer, but I couldn't snap a picture... The coast highway construction stops might just be worth the opportunity to grab the heater levers. I'm enjoying the hell out of this detour and the opportunities to pump my own gas. Did Chloe's ambulance fans get a workout?

You guys are ANIMALS to drive non-AC equipped VW's in 113* heat! I get and understand that a well tuned VW can handle it but not me. My VW's only see morning runs (early morning) during the Phoenix summer heat, especially when the moonsoons are around. What's the movie line? "I'm to old for this shit" or even better "A man has to know his limitations! :drunken:
