Itinerant Air-Cooled Greetings From Oregon I

I love the astonishing beauty of the landscape leading to and through the Columbia River Gorge leg of my itinerary.

Bonneville Dam? Taken at 55 mph in I-84 traffic, these pictures are haphazard compositions at best:

As always, I battled headwinds. As always, Chloe hardly cared, "if almost always at full throttle, do I care if it is wind or hauling my carcass up some hill?"

The view at the top of the hill:

The stupidhappy view along the endless ribbon of road:

The view of the Deschutes River just yards from the RendezVW:

The view just feet from the RendezVW:

The view just inches from Kirk:

Such a good bunch of people:

I loved our midnight walk where we lay in the road like teenagers and felt the train's approach across the river and saw a huge meteorite blast overhead:

Porsches! A flock of them passed through. I wanted to talk Type 4 so bad with so many, but I had work to do:

Airkooledchris, it looked like performance pantomime, but maybe he was just instructing his camera:

A beautiful deluxe Microbus with a gratifyingly longterm owner, 17 years was it? arty interior shot :

Here is Heather, a true Volkswagen vital spirit. There was a dawning recognition under the front end of her bus that I was talking with an experienced mechanical peer:

It was great to catch up with IFBwax and his beautiful family. Thank-you, Mark, for hosting this gathering of the tribe. It was a joy to see the multiplying numbers of the new generation of VW enthusiasts, these RendezVWs will be unforgettable memories for many.

I left Maupin with a sense that the future for these cars is up to us. We are the ones to guide our vendors/suppliers to provide the means to keep these wonderful cars running at the level they deserve, if we can just apply a polite relentless pressure for a little more excellent and a little less shoddy.

Lovely, just lovely. I very much hope to go to one of these... a visit home, and then off to Maupin.

Fascinating to remember the labor and the story behind these projects that just nestle in the landscape today.

Home is where the heart is, Dick.
It looks like she shares a Hiya! very expansive heart like her prior owner's,
big enough for the whooooole country .
