End of August Camp - 2011

Post by hambone » Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:12 pm

Once I get done sanding rust, I would like to have one last long wilderness fling before the kid goes back to school. You guys have any free time? :sunny:
Olallie, or maybe Cottonwood Meadows. Maybe even find a new camp near Dinger Lake. Someplace in the high country before the snow comes back...let's hope for a long glorious fall.

We were just at Olallie last weekend. It was packed with people. We got there Thursday evening and had trouble finding a decent site on the lake. Got the last one out of the two campgrounds there actually. And it was $15 a night for just a spot and a pit toilet! It's not really a wilderness camp spot. A nice spot, but camping in campgrounds only basically. I'll post some pics when I get the chance. I said it was going to be the last trip before I dropped the engine but I could be convinced to do one more. :cyclopsani:

There must be some good camps at trailheads in Olalle country. Those pay sites must get nuts. The resort used to be really cool, stuck in time. I hear they remodeled etc.
Part of my guide permit is Olallie country, I need to get to know that area better.
Did the skeeters eat ya alive?
Drop the engine in winter, the fall camps are the best as you know. Mark will be finally free too.

Not sure on the trail heads. Problem is that there is really only one road that goes through that area. FS4220. Not a whole lot of spur roads if any that I remember. A lot of that area is tribal land also. Even one little section of Olallie Lk. is inside the tribal boundary. There were way more people up there than I had ever imagined there would be. The road is much better than the last time I went in which only adds to the ease of access for people.

We didn't check out the resort. One reason the sites are so much per night is that even though they are Forest Service CG they are run under special agreement by the resort. I'm sure they're taking their cut. An employee comes around each morning and evening to collect fees and stock the terlets. The last night the guy didn't collect because we had paid for two nights the first morning and I told him we might not stay the third night. Guess he forgot that we had only paid for two nights. Made it a more reasonable fee of $10 a night. Skeeters were bad as soon as you got out of the winds off the lake. The spot we were in though had enough breeze to keep them away and they were only out for an hour or two after sunset. I think I only came home with one bite. I think it might be a much more peaceful place after Labor Day and the majority of people are done with vacations for the summer.

Need to take care of the front main seal that has been leaking since I installed it about 13k ago. I've been putting it off but the clutch is starting to chatter pretty bad at times now. Also need to retorque the heads which I never did. Shame on me....

Lovely. Nothing beats a Cascade-summer.
Oregon Skyline Trail used to go right thru there, there are still major abandoned sections. Such a short season, and a long way from Portland.
If you need space to work, my driveway is open. Yur probably set tho. It's always quicker with help.

Glad to hear it's nothing too major. Had me worried for a sec there. Great photos!

Cottonwood Mdws maybe. There is a middle mile of a very nice trail that has been clearcut and needs serious clarification. I'd sure appreciate some help from you chainsaw guys. If I remember correctly, it's pretty flat thru there. Good fishing, supposedly.
If the skeeters turn out to be terrible then there are other meadows etc. nearby.
I'm gonna work full-tilt on this SB all week so I have time off next week. Can you believe it's almost back to school time? Summer...
This camp, then High Rock. Then the golden hues and chilly nights of autumn.

Man, that's a lot of back tracking to get in there. To bad there's not a more direct way off of 58. Is the lake spring fed? Looks like it is on the north side. Looks pretty shallow too. Could be skeeter town. Is this one this coming weekend? 26-28? Don't think I'll be able to make it but maybe the High Rock camp.

I'm probably going with Eva early in the week for a few days, maybe come back before the weekend madness. Yeah I worry about the skeeters. It is out of the way, but that really keeps traffic down. It's pretty wild considering all the roads in the proximity.
I was also thinking about near Anvil Lk. I've never been to the TH by the lake, but not sure if there's a good camp spot thatway. Dinger Lk/Anvil Lk., have you been in that area? Is it pretty clearcut etc?

Been into Dinger lake but not Anvil. What I remember of Dinger lk. was being really marshy and full of bugs. Not sure about any campsites in that area. Buck lake just to the south is a really nice lake though. It's a short hike into it, like a half mile or so. Again, don't really remember any camp spots around there but I wasn't really looking for them either. There were clear cuts in the area but it's been a good twenty years for it to grow up since I spent any time up there. The timber around Buck lk. wasn't cut though. Pretty decent buffer around it.

Cottonwood:
224 to 57 to 58. Climb to Hideaway Lk sign, turn LEFT on 5830. Go past Hideaway and look for me, or signs.
If it turns out to to too buggy, plan B is Black Wolf.
Black Wolf:
Keep climbing on 58. Turn RIGHT on 160 just before High Rock. Watch for Ham.

Is ANYONE considering this trip? These places are of course incredible. I will be there mid-week for certain, possibly earlier.
