What's your favorite part of camping?

Post by IFBwax » Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:00 pm

I'll give you my two:

1. moments after getting to your spot and grabbing an ice cold beer out of the cooler while contemplating the unpacking.

2. Raising the pop top. To me that's the kickoff of fun and means you are ready to go.

Conversely, lowering the pop top is always sad for me meaning, that's all folks.

The friends I camp with, mostly.

Campfires and red wine.

The total and utter quiet that comes when the sun comes down and you're miles from any well-traveled road.

The glow of my candle lanterns shining through the glass windows of the Dormobile top.

1. The Smells. The bus smell. My tent smell. Campfire smell. My smell (OK not so much)
2. The Food. Breakfast Burritos. Plastic Chocolate donuts and ice cold milk. Foil Packs.
3. A quiet evening with good conversation. When my kids were young they wanted stories about me before they were born.

I enjoy the journey as much as the destination. The sights and sounds...and smells <good and bad>, the friends old and new, the just getting out and letting your mind rejuvenate with new sensations is what I like.

But it's traveling down a 2 lane highway in a sweet running bus when all you can see in the distance is the road stretching out before you, and taking in all that is around you. That is one of the things I really enjoy about camping.

I can't really pick a favorite.
I like the thought of camping, the planning, pulling out of the yard, arriving, chilling, etc.

My favorite part about camping......not being at work. That and the mental "reset" spending a few days in primitive wilderness seems to provide.

Have to say seeing the kids nodding off happy in the back on the way home is pretty good too. Sleepy and full of new memories.

Arriving at a nice, unoccupied site

Opening my 1st beer while I unpack

Completing the unpacking and set up process

Riding bikes and hiking with my boys

Hearing my boys question why anyone would be dumb enough to leave trash behind

Campfires and Dutch ovens

Discovering two more beers buried under the ice when I thought I'd run out

LOVE that one.

After having just taken a trip.. another one is that feeling about 2 to 3 days in when you (I) realize... I don't HAVE to do anything. No tidying up, no worrying about work, nothing. I can exhale and realize, wow, I'm now relaxed.
