Yeti Ice Chest Coolers & other 5 Day models
Since many of you probably camp, wondering if any of you own or have used a Yeti brand Ice Chest Cooler? If not Yeti, then one of the other brands that offer 5 Day Cooling.
I have always owned Coleman and just sold my 1980s 100qt and starting to look at a nice new longer lasting cooler. I see the Yetis are top notch but the price is way way way up there. Example, a 45qt is $279. Not sure I would ever spend that much but at the same time, these Yetis may just last a lifetime the way they are built and I don't mind paying for good long lasting equipment.
I see other brand 50qt coolers that show up to 5 days ice retention like Coleman and Igloo but wonder really if any of these coolers actually keep ice for that long. The Yetis appear to be the best on the market but just curious if anyone here has first hand knowledge on any 5 day coolers and how they performed.

Ice frozen in milk etc. jugs seem to keep longer.
That much $$$ for a cooler is crazy-talk.

I agree, Gypsie turned me on to the trick of freezing water in apple juice jugs. I tried this when we went to Maupin and even with an extended excursion to Wenatchee/Chelan on the way home, I still had ice in them six days later. This in a garden-variety Igloo cooler. Further, when the ice does melt, being contained in the apple juice jug keeps it from soaking everything else in the cooler.hambone wrote:Ice frozen in milk etc. jugs seem to keep longer.
Thanks, Gypsie!

I use the Coleman Extreme for my outfitting. If you keep the lid tight, and keep the sucker in the shade when possible...yes, 5 days...with blocks...cubes will melt in ANY cooler. I've had great luck with these, and no way am I gonna spend $200 plus for a cooler. You can find the Extremes on sale for 30-50 bucks. On extended trips, we pack one that we don't access at all for the 1st couple of days. Opening the lid to a cooler is the same as taking the top off a dutch oven to check the food...interferes with efficiency. If you have $275 to spend on a cooler...I have a bus I'll sell ya cheap

=D> Best cooler for the buck...and I use a lot of them. Make sure you snap the lid all the way, as it's designed to hang up unless you give it that extra ice-saving nudge. So...tell the wife you have $140 to spend on something else for camping . You're gonna like it...I have plenty and still buy one when on sale. Hinges break and you have a dry box...wahlah!

I use two of the Coleman Extremes. They are both great coolers. I use a combination of blocks and cubes. I have a Rubbermaid "dry box" that I put all of my meats and other dry items in and pack ice packs that I made with my Food Saver around it. Then all of my drinks go in the other side of the cooler with a couple bags of cubes around them. On a trip that doesn't get to hot I can keep ice for quite a while. The dry box is something I kick myself for not thinking of years ago. It's so nice to be able to find something easily that's not buried under 20lbs of wet, sharp ice.
Now on the Yeti, one of the guys I hunt with has one that he packs full of all of his frozen food he takes for a week and a half. With a few blocks of ice it will keep temps under freezing the entire time and never has to be replenished with fresh ice. He keeps a thermometer inside it. The thing is amazing. And for the price it should be. If you are packing for a long period of time and will be out where there is no run to the store for ice it's totally worth the cost. Specially if you have a lot of food that can spoil if temps get much over 40°. Keep in mind that where we hunt it's an hours trip into "town". Not something you want to do every couple of days just for ice.

back in the early 90's we used to freeze old milk jugs with water to bring to rave parties around Chicago, it would be ice cold all night long - even in some abandoned warehouse in the middle of July with no ventilation.
gonna try that this weekend. thanks.
