Loess Hills, Western Iowa

Post by Hippie » Mon May 24, 2010 8:49 pm

We took a mini-vacation (gotta love those) to the Loess ("Luss") Hills, and rented a cabin at Loess Hills Hidaway. A recommendable trip.
Since it was mid-week, we had the 35 acres to ourselves.
The weekends are full, so call ahead if you go.

Geologically loess deposits are pretty rare and not commonly seen.

Nice biking on the bike routes over there also.

Looks like pretty happy dogs (although tired) to me.

Lots of everything. Not really a predominance of oak.

Ya. With no one around they got to run around off-leash pretty much the whole time.
The park (top picture) is nice because the ranger said we could set-up anywhere there was an access. No campground required.

Oooh. Which part of the Loess Hills is that? The extensive woods are post settlement (not the original biota of that landscape) IIRC.

Since you were that close you should have gone over here to make a day of it....

Took me 2 days to go through it but I am sort of a geek also....(although I am so hip on the internet you would never know it).

I will be out there in August.

Iowa is way underrated in the beauty category. Too many of us only see it as we are tooling along on US 80.

I've figured that out too. When driving the back roads you see what inspired Grant Wood's landscapes. I've basically not strayed far from I-80 either.
