Hambone Springs, Part Deux (Sept 11-12 .. and beyond?)

Anyone up for a re-visit? September 11-12 (possibly into the 13th or 14th for those of you with weekends off, I'd have to skedaddle on the 12th)?

Joseph & Tammy wanted to go on the trip in July but couldn't make it .. and, well, they still wanna go there. Mary and I are game to go back (with an ample supply of water this time!) .. anyone else wanna go?

Not going to make the 18th -- money, distance, work blah blah blah...

Hambone is close enough that the financial impact is minimal .. and I didn't get to spend enough time there last trip anyway.

Them Huckleberries should either be fully ripe or done eaten. Either way you may get to see a bear. Or at least step in some droppings.

Yeah.......nothing like bear scat.

That and all the chatter about Sarah Palin (is she related to Michael Palin?) reminds me of a warning to hikers put out by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game a few years back. Went like this.....

With the increasing numbers of hikers and people enjoying all varieties of outdoor recreation the Fish & Game Department wants all folks to be on the lookout for bears. We have had an increasing number of confrontations between bears and humans. It is advisable for those venturing into our wildlands to be sure to let the bear know you are in the area. Tie small bells into the laces of your shoes. The noise they produce will allow the bear enough time to exit the area without ever having a confrontation. Be sure to carry pepper spray as a back-up measure.

And know how to recognize our native species, the Black Bear and his more aggressive cousin, the Grizzly Bear. Since a bear is much more likely to sense you before you are aware of it, recognizing scat (bear droppings) is good way to determine what kind of bear is in the area. Black Bear scats are recognizable because they will contain berries and other plant roughage found in the area. Grizzly Bear scat will contain small bells and smell like pepper spray.
