Mid Sept, Mid Cascades?
Since I missed just about every camp out this year, how about a trip to the Santiam, Mackenzie, or Willamette pass area? I know a whole buncha spots out there now, it's not all that far from PDX. Not really any further than it is from Waldport anyway. I think I've got enough time in at the brewery to request a weekend sometime, so....
We could do a river, high desert, lava fields, old growth, you name it.

Bend, more specifically the cascade lakes and such, are absolutely wonderful in August or September. Out east of Bend in the high desert can get hot, but I'm certain there are wondrous places out there to cool off in seclusion.

September is better for me as well...
Lava Fields, Desert country, some place with swimming, preferrably. not necessary though.
Isn't there an Ice cave out there somewheres? Went there when I was a boy scout some time back, may have melted by now.

So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Sept works too. I love the bend area, and all the passes. I don't really "know" bend, but google sees a gaggle of forest roads. I know a buncha spots in the mountains, near hot springs and such. And hwy 242 should be open by then too.

Depends on when and where...my engine is starting to get vibrational-grumbly LOUD-like at 60 MPH. It's always been there but is getting worse this year. It's strange because I get great gas milage and the engine stays pretty cool, even fully loaded. Colin thinks it's an internal imbalance coupled with high endplay. It was rebuilt locally before I got the bus, and now has about 60-70k miles on it.
I don't know if I trust it all the way to Bend at this point. It was really grumbling after Hambone Springs.
Also - Hunter's Moon in October if you guys can swing it. That's always been my favorite.

Sounds good to me! That's exactly where I was thinking. I hope 242 is open to there by then.

yeah, the pass had 30' of snow, took 'em until july to clear a path to some bridges they are repairing on the west side, and the east side is currently open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. They hope to have it fully open by september.

This area is really cool, high desert sage juniper river canyon. Just south of Cove Pallisades in Madras. Nice little campspot on Squaw Creek.
