What a colorfull history Hambone, thanks for posting that. John Breightenbush, a one-armed hunter and nothing else =D> That made me laugh. But sure tells the tale of how our beautifull places get ruined.

Is it now being commercialy used? I will put it on my list of places to visit when I get up that way.

We shouldn't get too far up, ya never know...Hope you all have chains. I'm buying some tomorrow.

...SNOW ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
5 AM PST THURSDAY FOR THE CASCADES OF SOUTH WASHINGTON...NORTH
OREGON...AND LANE COUNTY..

AN APPROACHING PACIFIC WEATHER SYSTEM WILL BRING 5 TO 9 INCHES OF NEW SNOW TO THE SOUTH WASHINGTON CASCADES THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT AND WILL BRING FROM 6 TO 10 INCHES OF NEW SNOW IN THE
NORTH OREGON CASCADES AND THE OREGON CASCADES OF LANE COUNTY.
GUSTY WINDS MAY BRING SOME DRIFTING OR LOCAL BLOWING SNOW AS THE COLD FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS TONIGHT.

SNOW LEVELS WILL BE WELL BELOW MOUNTAIN PASSES...BETWEEN 1500 AND
2000 FEET.

A SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
USE CAUTION?!? THAT'S NO FUN AT ALL.

Today: A 20 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 41. South southeast wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Tonight: Periods of showers. Low around 33. South wind 7 to 14 mph becoming west. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Thursday: Periods of showers, mainly before 10am. High near 41. West wind between 9 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Thursday Night: A chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32. West southwest wind 7 to 9 mph becoming east. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. East wind around 7 mph becoming south.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 38.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28.

Sunday: Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41
Sounds absolutely PERFECT :flower:

Waiting to catch the FS guy when he's back in the office today. I'll give a report as soon as I have one.

It's worth it, price includes 3 meals a day and unlimited use of springs and facilities. I love it there.

Again a misunderstanding :cyclopsani: It is very reasonable in price and cost of lectures and work shops. My head was just in a bus camp mode in the snowy wilderness. Do you stay in your bus when you go there? If I lived as close as you, I too would love the knowledge available. We have many of the same teachers in our little town, but not on that beautifull water.

I've only been there once, can't really afford it! You can camp there in the summertime. We stayed in one of those little cabins, it was a lot of fun.

I just called your home phone and left a message about getting one of those lil' buddy space heaters that one of the posters (grady) used in his westy in Montana. Might be good to have.

No, but our Coleman catalytic heater can get it pretty tolerable even when it's in the teens outside (another person helps too, of course).

I thought about it but I'm too low tech for that. Screw it, wool and campfire has worked for thousands of years. It's already cheating sleeping in the bus.
Will I be the only heaterless camper this weekend???? Hope I find a nice female Sasquatch to keep me warm.

Okay gang...decision time. I tried to contact the ranger in the area...he was out all day and didn't return my call. Spoke with a nice lady at Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort. She said it was snowing lightly and to be careful on the approach because there is some black ice on the road from last week's snow. She told me how to find the abandoned springs...said the tubs are rather yucky from what she's heard but it could be cool to explore....is within a couple of miles or so from where we were thinking of freezing....er, I mean camping.

What do you think about this: take 22 to Detroit, jump on 46 which is the paved road to Breitenbush. Just past Cleator Bend campground there is a righthand turn which crosses the river on a gravel road (I believe there are signs to Breitenbush too). This road on my map is marked 2231 / 890. About a 1/2 mile up this road, it takes a sharp right (continues as 2231 to the right)...if you went straight here you'd get onto 890 (which I believe goes the rest of the way to Breitenbush. Take the right to stay on 2231, and in 1/2 mile or so we SHOULD get close to Hill Creek...Bob and I can look for a good spot after the sharp right on 2231. There is a 200 foot climb in this 1/2 mile up to 2500 ft...may be iffy to get all the way up there...won't know until we're there. I'll bring paper plates marked with VW and post something where the sharp right is to let you guys know to make the turn, or continue straight because we found something more suitable. This is kind of a crap-shoot as none of is is real familiar with this place. Last word is weather should be 20's-30's at night in Detroit and days in the 30's to 40....that is at 1600 feet.

So, summary...take 22 to Detroit, get on 46 towards Breitenbush...go approx 10 miles just past Cleator Bend....take a right on a gravel road that crosses the river...about 1/2 mile look for a junction going to the right....look for VW signs. Oh...lady said she doesn't recall there being signs marking the road numbers...but according to my maps...they're the only roads marked.

DJeep...have your radio set to channel 2...mine doesn't do privacy channels so just straight 2.

How does this plan sound? If anyone has other thoughts, e.g., Shady Cove campground at a slightly lower elevation...that works for me too...I don't really care..... We're just down to decision-time!

John and DJ...what time do you plan to leave Eugene???? Do you have good maps?...or Bob, post a good shot of where I'm talking. Looking forward to camping with you guys!

Mark,
That sounds like a plan. Realistically, I'll be lucky to be on the road by 6:00 PM. So I'll be looking for those plates. I don't have a good map of the area, I'll see about picking one up.
Today I got chains and a warmer sleeping bag so I think I’m getting there.

Most importantly, has anyone had Siletz Chocolate Stout? I'll try to bring a few bottles. Very nice around a campfire in the cold.
