In the pines, location TBD
Mark, is there still snow in the Maupin area? There has been a lot of warm rain lately though.
I'm partial to the Lil Badger area, the south side Bonney Crossing area is just too busy.

Nothing like a camping trip to test an engine!

I'm in. I think Mark was going to try and get up there to check where the snow is at a couple weeks ago. Don't know if he made it though.

Wow! Good turnout. Hope the rest of the regular crew can make it.

According to this map, the snow is still lingering in that area. Crap!

a very handy map to be sure.

I was interested in Tygh Creek around FS27. Actually there is an old road just east of there, but not sure if it's still a ROADl Go to the town of "Friend" and head west. With the winter we've gone thru there is probably still snow out in East Badger Creek. Hootnanny Point nearby...I've always wanted to bushwack up there with a guitar.

What about that camp on the lower John Day? We've thought about that one for years. From 2014:
"
Hey I found that the BLM has a little-advertised campground (free no less) not far from Arlington, "John Day Crossing Camp". Not far from the Dalles.

It's where the Oregon Trail crossed, that would be very interesting to explore.
River Mile 20.4 - 25 miles southwest of Arlington, via Blalock Canyon Road to Rock Creek Lane
I'm pretty sure it's here:

Here is someone's trip report from a few years ago. Not a lot of info out there on the inter-webs on this place, maybe a good sign.

I'm still on the "maybe" list. New engine setbacks...

Uh oh...screw it just put a type4 in there like I've been saying. Or a 1200.

Hey we should go to John Day when the fish are biting, it's a long drive for no activities. Badger Creek, maybe the snow will be gone.

I'd like to try the John Day spot some time. I heard the bass fishing is supposed to be great there.

I can probably get out of town Thursday afternoon. What day are you thinking of leaving?

feel like the most difficult option at this historical moment is a type 4. putting this 2.0 back together i'm struck by how many parts i need to find new, despite the pile of parts i've hoarded over the years. and, well, new type 4 parts...you know...

Thinking about along 120 or 130 road to a couple of creeks just north of Little Badger.
All depends on the snowpack and if the roads are still in service. Lil B' could be plan B, or even that ridge we have camped on a few times just above Lil' B Camp.
All depends on the snow level.
I may be able to get out on Thursday let me see.

I'm not seeing those roads on Google Maps. Of course they don't always label the FS roads correctly. What creeks are you looking at?

Here is the map:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2-EKL ... sp=sharing

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tygh+Va ... 247341!1m0

Directions (patched together from various years): If you're coming in 84, take 84 east to The Dalles...last exit number 87. Head south on US197 about 35 miles to the flashing light at Tygh Valley.
If you're taking 26 past Government Camp, continue to OR216. Turn left (north) on 197 to Tygh Valley.
Turn right into town...and at the tavern, turn a hard right taking you toward the fair ground. Go past the fairgrounds...stay on the main road...it will turn to gravel with signs saying "Badger Creek Rd". Stay on this for 8 miles give or take.

We will be at 1 of 3 camps, watch for signs or the orange hubcap;
Camp 1 turn RIGHT then IMMEDIATELY LEFT on 130 road about 2 miles (or 120 road if it's impassible)
Camp 2 is Little Badger, LEFT down into the camp (you will see a giant sign)
Camp 3 is past Little Badger on 2710, climb up the ridge and then take the first LEFT at the top

With the winter we've had, there is no telling how bad the roads are out there. I'm hoping the snow is gone!

I'm hoping with that side getting good sun exposure most of the snow has melted. Have your heard anything from Mark?

Looks like I can get out tomorrow morning, making it out to the camp by early afternoon, wherever that might be..fingers crossed.
Hope to see some of you out there! Mark is not sure yet, give him hell. Jasan when are you heading out?

Hey I also have that Spot Messenger, I can send a link to my exact location once I get there, if someone could be so kind to post the link here.
