What a cool read. I love the recollection of the men loading 40 pigs and 1 cow in a boxcar and going to use a steam engine to lower the car down the hill only to cut the cable releasing the boxcar killing all but one pig. Then if that is not bad enough they take dynamite to blow open a hole large enough to bury the dead animals but instead ignite it to close to the wrecked boxcar blowing dead animals all over the hillside.

With all that recent snowfall in the Cascades we may not be able to make it up to Cot Creek at almost 3000'.
I will most likely be the first out there on Thursday (unless someone wants to join me), so I'll go as far as possible. If the snow stops me, I'll head back towards the Clackamas.

Look for me at either
#1 Fish Creek Road (about a mile or so down towards the washout)
#2 Sunstrip Campground (near Roaring River)
both are just off 224

I'll put up a paper plate with a ridiculous, meager VW logo crudely, offensively scribbled (as if by a retarded ape). Who knows, maybe we'll get some warm weather and the snow will melt.
Jim H. and his girlfriend Gaye went up the Clackamas on Friday (March 2) afternoon. I briefed them on the Ripplebrook/Job Corps deal but they chose to backpack in 2 and a half miles up the closed and removed road up Fish Creek. They camped up Fish Creek for two nights. On the second night (Sat.) Jim heard light but sustained movement in the brush around camp after dark but before bed. Just before dawn he was awakened by a strong skunk smell. After sunrise he checked the area and found two fresh footprints in the duff about fifty feet from camp. He says they were very clear, close together, and about 15 inches long. Jim feels confident that his camp was cased by Mr. Squatch and he tends to be on the skeptical side when it comes to that which some see as Bigfoot tracks.

Here. Print this out and glue it to the plate. You belong to the Itinerant Air-Cooled Tribe, where a little art and a little whimsy is . . . part of the magic.

Weather is all over the place next week. It's too early to tell. It doesn't look like we'll make it all the way to Cot Creek though, from the way the snow has been piling up out there lately. I'm shooting for Fish Creek; if that doesn't work out then it'll probably be one of the Clackamas camps. Or we could go to the other side to Badger Creek, but that's a coin toss too, no telling where the snow level is.
I would much rather be in the deep wilderness, but what can you do this time of year? Any camping is good camping, yes? Within reason...
You guys tell me, what do you think? I will talk with Don next week, he was going to scout out the area for me.
Badger Creek would work too, but it's a long drive so we'd need to know the snow situation before hand.

I'm fine with whatever as long as we can find you. Fish creek would bring back some memories of my youth. We had some wild times up there.

Unfortunately there is only about 2 miles of the road remaining from the '96 washouts. I was thru there in the fall and it looked promising, but I didn't stop to look.
Did you know there used to be a trail on the other side of Fish Creek? Went for miles. I've never looked for it though, not sure how to cross the creek.
You'll find me! I'll try to make it obvious.

On the way in, check Armstrong CG, then Fish Creek Road, Then Sunstrip CG. If I'm not there then I'm basking in the glory of Cot Creek, or off the road somewhere. Off the rocker, more likely.

Clackamas Canyon forecast, take it with a grain o' salt:

Thursday A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45.
Thursday Night A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Friday Mostly sunny, with a high near 48.
Friday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Saturday Partly sunny, with a high near 50.
Saturday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40.

Sunday A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51.

Looks pretty good! And there are a few good trails in the area, some secret...some abandoned, always something to do. I'd like to explore up Fish Creek too.
