Road Trip to the Central Waters Brewery in Amherst WI

Post by locoqueso » Tue May 29, 2012 6:49 pm

The bus isn't running at the moment but I really needed a road trip, so...

I had to roll out the old 1993 Dodge B350, and drove it north to Wisconsin.

The first stop was a night at the campgrounds in IL Beach State Park. The fun continued into Lake Geneva WI for some lunch and then it was on to the Ho-Chunk Casino near the Wisconsin Dells for the worst dinner buffet on Earth. The next day I made it to the tasting room at the Central Waters Brewery. Good beer at a fair price, but the service was rude and then a high school graduation party filled the room so i bought a growler full of IPA and called it a day.

Officially it was a road trip, but I sure do miss the bus. It can make any trip fun.

I do agree. Looking forward to planned excursions coming up. Maupin, then Eureka, and back for a test run. Then a late summer longer run to four corners areas.

Officially, it sounds like a worthy road trip with pangs of bus withdrawal.

Hartman Creek State Park is pretty close to Amherst and is very nice. Next time you're rolling through be sure to drop me a line, I'm not far south of the Dells.

The Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout is one of my favorites!

Got some pictures of the Dodge inside? Looks groovy!
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I LOVE THAT DODGE. beautiful van! we had one growing up (non-camper version of the same model) and it was my favorite place to be.

I spent most of my summers in the Dells, at a friends family motel (it was a little 10 unit L-shaped thing that ended up becoming part of the Ho-Chunk parking lot once they finally caved and sold) - even got to drive a Duck a few times, though only in the water.

Never heard of the Central Waters brewery though, ill have to check it out the next time im back visiting my folks.

NEAL - When you coming to Eureka? Going to do any camping in the area, or just visit? There's a GREAT new beer place in Eureka now called 'the local' - id love to buy you guys a pint or two if you have time.

I think you may be right.

Sounds good, I didn't realize you were so close.

I didn't get to try the Central Waters stouts, but I saw they had a coffee and a chocolate on tap. I wanted to save those for last.

IL Beach was nice and quiet, probably 10% full. I don't think a lot of people realize they reopened the campgrounds. The tornado ripped it up pretty bad.

I do like the Dodge camper a lot. I just don't have the same sentamental connection like I have with the VW. That actually allows me to enjoy camping in the Dodge. I don't care if anyone spills, stains, tears, etc.

As a kid, we went to the WI Dells for a couple/few summer vacations. I thought that was the best place in the world. The trips are one of my favorite childhood memories of my Dad. I had to stop for some breakfast at Paul Bunyan's while I was there last weekend. We spent the night stealth camping in the Ho-Chunk parking lot on Friday night and then up to the Dells for breakfast.

I've posted a few pics below... There should be a bathroom in the back, but I tore out the toliet and flooring to restore it. I need to get the new toliet out of my living room and installed into the camper!

That is a pretty sweet rig, have to agree with airkooledchris. Love the interior shots. So like a bus but ... not.

Hitting Eureka straight from Maupin again. Definitely pints while I'm there.

That is pretty sweet! They sure did put a lot into that van, and a toilet? Let me guess, a shower too?

Oh yeah, looking back there's a shower stall on the right side with the coach battery hidden underneath. I'm using the shower as a place to hold the cats litterpan but it works. On the left, there's a bunch of storage and an Onan 2800W generator. It has a fridge, microwave, and A/C unit up front. It's like a little house on wheels.
