IAC Clackamas River Oregon Campout Nov 17-19 2006
I figured I'd just create a new thread for this campout, the other one is getting crazy.
If you're planning on going, here's the place for info and to give your 10 cents.
The dates: November 17-19.
(I have Fri Nov 17th off of work, does anyone else?)
Where to meet: we can either meet somewhere in Portland, or in the town of Estacada which is on the edge of the national forest. Please specify your preference.
Also, if you are planning on attending, please post yer info here so I can find an adequate location and we can work together on this.
I'm heading out that way tormorrow for a class project, so I'll scope out a couple areas and mebbe post a couple pics so you guys can decide democratically. The trip will be on mostly paved Forest Service Roads, with some gravel roads further in.
Please be aware: it will likely be cold and rainy! There will be no facilities! Nor will there be crowds or modern conveniences. We will be about 50 miles from civilization, so bring spare parts, plenty of food, warm clothes, stout, etc.
Looking forward to it!

Hang on to your hats kids:
"Rain is moving into the northwest this morning. Yes, it's another storm with tropical moisture connected with it. There are high wind advisories in effect for the Willamette Valley and high wind warnings in effect for the coast. Gusts to 65 mph are likely at the coastal headlands and 45 mph gusts are possible in the valley today. We could get up to one inch of rain through tonight and snow levels will drop from 5000' to 3500' feet tonight. Tomorrow is relatively dry, but there is still a chance of showers. Sunday an even stronger storm arrives. This one is a "soaker" and also possibly a windstorm event for the valley. We are watching it closely. Stay tuned throughout the weekend for more information."
There's apparently a big log jam on the Sandy River above Lolo Pass ready to bust loose, no campin' over there -

I would really like to go. I am beginning to lobby at home for this event. We'll see if Lori will come. If not I still may bring my 6 year old, (she's a toughie as long as she stays warm.)
I love the Clackie area. Since it is probably going to be wet cold and completely dreary I bet most of the "Yahoos" will stay home which might be a good thing for a Bagby day trip?? Hot tub in the cool rain!
What kind of park pass(es) should we have?-
Rain!!! I laugh at Rain. Hah! I spit in Rain's general direction.
Snow, on the other hand....

Just got back from out there, man is it cold and windy and dripping. I hope somebody has a heater! I was wondering how the natives handled the winters? They must have just hunkered down in the Willamette Valley somewhere...big fires.
I just checked the weather forecast, rain and in the 40s all the way until Thursday. Snow down to 2500'! Early to be that low. The change in the seasons has been quite dramatic.
You won't need a forest pass or anything like that, this is called "dispersed camping" and is legal to do anywhere on Forest Service administered public lands.

You don't have to use the [img] tags here like samba. Just copy and paste the BBCode on the photo's page directly into the message body.hambone wrote:

I hope the Clackamas River highway holds together. That road is notorious for rock/land slides.
Chorizo, it's what's for breakfast.

There's always a possibility of black bear and even cougar in the Cascades. At the same time though, in all the years I've camped, hiked, and backpacked in the NW I've only seen one bear. In other words I wouldn't worry to much about it.LiveonJG wrote:Excuse my City Boy ignorance, but will bears be an issue?

After spending all day digging out the sh**t from our sump well (found an old stuffed animal, a mason jar, and a shirt along with all my dry heaves) I am feeling the jet stream....lots o'water, but I have my sump pump working like a champ!!!!
Lets get a list going with "must haves"???
I will bring a large tarp and extra rope to shield the "hang area" but extra rope is always useful.
I have some firewood from my old cherry tree that decided it couldn't handle last years rain and then massive amounts of sun....the latest growth ring was an inch thick!
CD player and radio with fresh batteries. Mine should last us through the weekend...if not we can switch to crickets or bus stereos for some nice blue grass or whatever the group decides.
Anything else besides the personal stuff?
