at Chuck’s 4th of July Bash (1p - ?)
13011 SE Foster Rd
Portland, Oregon 97236

Just a heads up/reminder about Chuck’s annual 4th of July picnic/party. This year it’s going to be held on Saturday, July 4th...starting around 1:00 PM. (We say "about" because it’s all rather loose...) We’ll be bustin’ out a number of new tunes, and and of course, some from the vault. It’s a Pot Luck, so bring some food and drinks. There will be a PA and back line set up, so you pickers just bring your axes and you’ll be good to go. There will be enough players to form impromtu bands...sure to be a lot of fun, as it has been in years past. There most-likely will be two pedal steels set up as well. We plan to party hardy until the sun goes down.

Sounds like I need to make a trip out to Bend this summer! Had a blast at Maupin and what beautiful country out there! Haven't been to Bend since like '95... :colors:

Just to be sure I'm visualizing this correctly... You're the guy that DOESN'T look like one of the X-men here? Right?

Yep, paper cup in a Westy Camper Life cozy, last year's Maupin shirt. Anytime, come on down. I love playing with Steel Guitar players.

I really want to get out into the Ochocos again this August that should be the IAC Central Oregon camp, mid August.

Our July just filled up with the 4th, Oregon Country Fair (anyone else going?) and then a trip to my parents in Astoria two weekends in a row (dropping wife and kids off one weekend, coming back and working M-Thu, picking up the next weekend.)

No Hambone Springs for you this year? Bummer.
Ochocos sound good, maybe towards the end of August though for me at least.

Yeah, very likely no Hambone Springs for us this year. Maybe Boston and I will run up for a night. We'll see. Sommer says for sure she is never traveling the Abbot Road again. :)

Camp Easter has me locked into the Dunnigan Mountain retreat for the Fourth, otherwise I would come on out.

Had a BLAST!

Camped there for 3 days. Arrived at about 2pm on Friday and did a photo shoot with my brother Eric and his girly friend, Mariah... and my bus!

Very cool photos! What did you use to highlight them like that? I guess I should have attended Glasseye's class in Maupin. 8-[

LOVE LOVE LOVE the photos! Especially the one with the firework explosion and the two of Mariah. Gotta love a woman who wears vintage clothes with boots, even if they were cockroach killers! :geek:

I should've taken an overall shot of the lighting setup, which I WILL DO in the future.

This is basically how the lighting was setup though... I hope you get the idea.
The sun was used for the MAIN light and it was camera left and a little BEHIND the models.
I take my camera and expose for the overall scene in the photo, and then underexpose it by 2 stops. That way you can actually darken the outside environment to obtain better colors and use the studio lights to highlight the subjects.
BTW, I have a polarizing filter on my lens which will minimize reflections in glass AND make blue skies, bluer!
Good tool to have if you shoot with an SLR.
You control the fill lighting by adjusting your f/stop on the camera OR depending on your environment, moving the lights closer or farther away from the subject.
Final image uses classic darkroom techniques that are available in my DIGITAL DARKROOM. Dodging and Burning... Those you should've learned from Glasseye, but I wasn't there... Didn't KNOW ABOUT IT! :blackeye:
Next year I would love to assist glasseye in any photoshop, camera composition techniques, etc...
or at least sit in and learn more! He is such a great guy!

Image

There are still many tools I would like to have i.e. pocket wizards (wireless flash triggers), more strobe flashes, an actual portrait lens (thinking a 105mm), ring flash (which goes OVER your lens so you shoot THROUGH the flash and it creates really cool fill lighting.
Right now it's just using the tools I have, which is not bad, but could be a lot better!

Just a note: The fill light on the far camera right side could easily be replaced with a reflector i.e. cardboard with tin foil...
;)
