IAC member late summer/fall camp out
Again as discussed in this thread
http://itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtop ... 5&start=15
Any one interested in doing an IAC member camp out sometime in late September or October? Champoeg State park located around 30 minutes south of Portland and ~30 minutes north of Salem has a group camp area and meeting hall complete with wood stove and tables/chairs available for $81 for the first 10 vehicles, $8 for each additional after that.
http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_113.php
Second option would be Silver Falls State park. Located east of Salem. Around an hour from Portland, hour and a half from Eugene? Same rates for the group camp area. Not sure if the lodge is included in that price.

So who's up for it? What weekend works best for the majority?

Re: IAC member late summer/fall camp out
Won't know my schedule that far out, but I am definitely interested. Either campsite works for me since I have never been to either one.Westy78 wrote:Again as discussed in this thread

Pick a date and I will do my best to work around it. Even if I have to leave the family here

What about the Middle Santiam Wilderness area? Or are you guys lookin for amenities? (not everybody is wilderness-crazy like me) Some of the biggest trees in Oregon down there. Mebbe another trip in the fall. Too many places, too little time!
"Mature old-growth trees shadow virtually all of this Wilderness, with Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock at lower elevations and true firs higher up. Some of the trees, estimated to be 450 years old, tower to more than 200 feet. Gently sloping, benchy terrain in the lower country starts at about 1,600 feet and rises to steep slopes, ridges, and peaks that reach 5,022 feet above sea level. The most prominent geological feature is 4,965-foot Chimney Peak, a lava plug in the northwestern portion.
The Middle Santiam River flows through the area, slowing into quiet pools with mossy banks. Both the river and Donaca Lake teem with native fish, including chinook salmon during spawning season. Not far to the south lies Menagerie Wilderness (see above). Three seldom-hiked trails provide access routes to the area: McQuade Creek (6.1 miles); Chimney Peak, a short spur leading almost to the summit of Chimney Peak; and Middle Santiam (11.4 miles), which allows you to cross the area."

I would love a game of gonzo friz golf out in the outback. (pick a tree, agree on a par, play the course). I like to carry my own amenities and hate to pay for anything I shouldn't have to (like standing outside!?!?!?).
I do think that Mciver is too close to P-town to weed out the Yahooligans.
There's always the San Juan trip we were chattin about a while back. Lopez Island. Odlin Park is beautiful in late summer and the summer crowd is mostly gone. Crabbin' right off the pier in the campground. great kayakin if you got one. Island hoppin, biking.
4-5 hours to the ferry landing with a moderate pace. Might be able to pick up Spiffy along the way???
Just throwin it out there but do not want to thin the crowd at all. I am completely restricted to weekends because of a new job anyway and it is quite a little drive. Might be able to find a three day in there (after the Labor day one)
Though I wouldn't mind one of the closer state parks. Hambone and I were pretty much relegated to the grounds proper when we were at silver falls and we didn't get to do the silver falls hike. I would love to check it out again.
Also, (I'm on a roll now), after school starts most of the camp grounds up on the clacky thin way down. There are some nice layouts for a big bus gathering. Easy to find, very thin on amenities and closer to the wild country.
How big of a gathering are we talking??? Chime in all...
It would be good to have a Northwest Contingency gathering.

I'm just gonna camp camp CAMP until my pants fall off. I'm sick o' the city. And it's always great fun to have Volx Folx along otherwise I start doin standup monologues for the cedars and Douglas Chimps.....
So, I am particular to th Wild Lands but if there are other dealins afoot then count me in! I understand some people aren't as comfortable outside a campground and that is cool, everybody's got their own point of view.
And I'm sure the IAC backcountry trips will continue every other month until Jasan and Stephan get sick of me! November will be our 1st anniversary, and I believe we were the first to plant the IAC flag out in the boonies.
Does that help?

YES! That trip is still on for the second week of September. I just got back from the outback where it was nice and sunny without this god awful humidity. Ah, so nice to be back home.spiffy wrote:We will be in the San Juans come hell er high water
Remember next weekend too. Hambone Springs.
I think I've done more camping this year than the last two combined.

I'm in the Salem area currently, so I'll be in if it's more than a couple weeks away.
