1977 Bus - Rubber Fuel filler Neck replacement.

Post by Sluggo » Tue Apr 26, 2011 4:19 pm

The little rubber elbow with block off flaps on the fuel filler required to pass CA emissions. Mine is cracked & leaking. Since I'm no longer in CA I don't need it. Is there a way to bypass it? Can I take a fill pipe off of another Bus? If so, what years?

That's the one. I'd rather find a way around it than replace the crappy repop with another every few years.

After thinking about it all night I can't see how to bypass that piece. I just ordered it from Bus Boys for $19. Should be here in a few days. Hopefully it's better quality than the other replacements I've seen. I think mine was OG because it had the birds beak. It looked perfect when I first bought the bus but now it's shredded. Scott at German Supply sells one for $35 that's supposed to be the best but I didn't want to spend that much $

So a cracked $19.00 one that lasted three years is $38.00 at replacement day.

BobD's original one is fine. I'd pay $35.00 if it was guaranteed good.

I bought a NOS one on That Auction Site a while back for $25.00. They do pop up from time to time. It was for a Federal, not a California, but the last 2 smog checks I have gone through they didn't even look.

I read that the Bus Boys one is very good on several Samba posts. We'll see. I'd gladly pay $50 for one that would last another 30 years. But that's unlikely to happen. If this one fails I'll give Scott's version a try.

211-201-119 I believe they add letters at the end to designate a "birds beak". But, from what I understand, this is all that's available.

After smelling gas the whole trip to Maupin and back I got pissed off today and ripped the engine and gas tank out. Found that the leak is the filler neck which had a crack in it. I will have to call Busboys to get one as I sure don't want to have to rip all this out again in 3 years.....

Make sure you check the O ring on the sending unit too while you have your tank out, mine was leaking from there as well

Hmm, its brand new but I'll check it. Ordered the neck from Busdepot which said its OEM VW.

Geeze ... anger management, man.
:alien:
You can't replace the filler neck from the pie plate hole?

Good point, we replaced ours once without removing the gas tank or engine. I think I custom cut one from the local Autozone. I think Jill's smaller hands came in handy.
However, within a year when we had the engine out, I replaced our sending unit and fitted the filler neck on better.
I have also seen the gas tanked removed from a 78 FI with the engine still in the bus.
